With the highly anticipated release of The Final Shape expansion, which is said to be the grand conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga in Destiny 2, there is immense pressure on the game to tie up loose ends and conclude character storylines. The Veil Containment mission, which serves as the latest means of conveying important information about the game's universe and timeline, may not meet players' expectations. There is also a possibility that many players are unaware of the mission and its significance in the game's lore.
Following the unanswered questions raised in the Lightfall expansion and Season of Defiance, Destiny 2's Season of the Deep offers a new lore drop that sheds light on the current story and provides fresh perspectives on past events. This lore drop can be experienced through the Veil Containment mission on Neptune, which can be replayed. Despite its impactful lore, the mission runs the risk of being easily overlooked and lacking the climactic storytelling seen in other recent in-game lore reveals.
Destiny 2’s Storytelling Can Be Very Confusing
The Veil Containment mission suffers from a lack of communication to players regarding its ability to be repeated on subsequent weekly resets after initial completion. Unlike other activities in Destiny 2 that vie for players' attention each week by offering enticing rewards such as Pinnacle gear Engrams, Veil Containment fails to provide such information.
After the initial completion, players will not receive any additional rewards for repeating the mission each week. The repeated completions are primarily meant for avid Destiny 2 lore enthusiasts who wish to delve deeper into the ongoing story. Currently, in the Season of the Deep, players can enter the Veil Containment mission and experience all the lore in one visit, as the weekly timegates have already expired.
Even prior to their first completion of Veil Containment, the mission itself is not clearly advertised. Initially, players receive the mission from Cloudstrider Nimbus as part of a quest to obtain a weapon featured in the Lightfall expansion. With the availability of the Epochal Integration weapon, most players who acquire it are unlikely to consider repeating the Veil Containment mission, especially after additional weekly resets.
Veil Containment suffers from another issue - lack of replayability. Once players have completed the mission, they are placed at the end of it upon subsequent plays, with only the terminal for initiating lore reveals available for interaction. While the lack of replayability is not a major problem, some of Destiny 2's seasonal storylines have received criticism from the community for their underwhelming storytelling methods, and Veil Containment is no exception.
When compared to recent seasons in Destiny 2, the lore presented in Veil Containment offers more substantial information than the implications of past seasons. It delves into the Veil's connection to Neptune, the Vex, Exos, Siva, Savathun, and other related topics.
Future content in Destiny 2 should be cautious about repeating the flaws of the Veil Containment mission, where players often miss out on experiencing the revealed lore. While offering lore through repeated mission completions is a usual practice in the game, the lack of advertisement for this specific quest prevents it from reaching a wider audience.
