Some Destiny 2 players are growing disappointed with the game and considering not playing the upcoming expansion, The Final Shape. One possible reason for this dissatisfaction could be the frustrating server bugs and challenging difficulty spikes in the recent Season of the Deep.
Since its launch in 2017, Destiny 2 has been well-received and regularly updated. Each new chapter offers new maps, equipment, limited-time events, and advances the story. Lightfall is the current chapter, and it will be followed by The Final Shape in 2024, which will conclude the current saga. Bungie has announced plans for a new saga to follow shortly after, but it appears that some players may not be supportive of this direction and are contemplating leaving the game.
One notable example is Reddit user OmegaXVI_Prime, who posed the question to fellow Destiny fans about their commitment to sticking with Destiny 2 until its conclusion. A remarkable response came from Obersword, expressing boredom with the repetitive nature of each new chapter's gameplay loop. They confessed to only being interested in new story elements and stated that they would likely play The Final Shape solely for its plot. However, they hoped that Bungie would retire Destiny 2 afterward and would resort to watching cutscenes of future chapters on YouTube if the developer decided not to continue the game.
Other users in the replies agreed with this sentiment, citing the significant amount of time and money they have invested in Destiny 2 DLC. As a result, they expressed a desire to save money and create more free time for other activities. Some even admitted to experiencing burnout during the Lightfall campaign and taking a similar approach. Speculation arose among other users regarding the reasons behind the continuation of the story after The Final Shape, suggesting that it may be driven primarily by players continuously spending money on the game.
The majority representation of this segment of the player base remains uncertain, however, it is evident that Bungie has no intention of abandoning Destiny 2 in the near future. Sustaining a game for such a prolonged period is not unusual, as exemplified by titles like World of Warcraft and Minecraft, which continue to release updates and downloadable content more than a decade after their launch. The duration for which Destiny 2 will maintain its storyline can only be determined with the passage of time.
Destiny 2 can be played on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
