Season of the Witch in Destiny 2 brings a new Strand grenade launcher, Cataphract GL3, to Trials of Osiris, expanding the endgame PvP activity's arsenal.
Trials of Osiris presents thrilling incentives such as coveted weaponry and armor, alongside the opportunity to achieve flawless status for a memorable journey to The Lighthouse on Mercury.
Although heavy grenade launchers have not garnered much attention in endgame pursuits, enhancements and potential perk synergies could render Cataphract a compelling alternative for high damage output in the times to come.
A new season of Destiny 2 introduces a range of fresh weapons for players to enhance their arsenal. One noteworthy addition is the Cataphract GL3, a new Strand grenade launcher, obtainable within the Trials of Osiris activity. Bungie has consistently paid attention to the gear available in this high-level PvP activity, delivering new armor sets and at least one new weapon each season since Lightfall was released. In line with this trend, Season of the Witch brings forth the activity's latest heavy weapon - only the second Strand heavy grenade launcher in the game since the subclass' introduction.
Since its inception in the House of Wolves DLC, Trials of Osiris has stood as a prominent endgame PvP activity in both Destiny and Destiny 2. This mode sets two teams of three guardians against each other in an elimination-style game, where the first team to secure five rounds emerges victorious. To further captivate players, Trials of Osiris regularly offers some of the most sought-after weapons and armor in the game, including adept gear for those who achieve flawless performance on a Trials card, granting access to The Lighthouse on Mercury.
The Cataphract GL3, an adaptive frame Strand heavy grenade launcher, has been added as the newest weapon to Trials of Osiris' arsenal. This powerful weapon can be obtained randomly by completing matches, opening engrams, or by reaching rank 10 with Saint-14 to unlock it for Trials engram focusing. Bungie has loaded the Cataphract with several sought-after perks, including Bait and Switch, Auto-Loading Holster, and Hatchling, making it an excellent choice for players utilizing Strand builds that heavily rely on Threadlings.
In endgame activities like raids and Grandmaster strikes, grenade launchers are not commonly chosen by players. Although heavy grenade launchers were improved in Season of the Witch, rocket launchers and linear fusion rifles are still the preferred options for dealing boss damage. However, some players believe that an additional buff to heavy grenade launchers could make them a viable choice for DPS. If this happens, Cataphract would be an ideal option due to its potential perk combinations.
The introduction of the grenade launcher coincided with the return of Igneous Hammer, a Solar hand cannon that was initially released in Season of the Chosen. Its reappearance in Season of the Witch brings a refreshed perk pool and the inclusion of Origin Traits for both Crucible and Trials.
Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
