Bungie's management of Destiny 2's paid content and microtransactions has sparked a growing discontent among the game's prominent content creators and the wider community. Over time, Destiny has seen an increase in monetization features, leading some to believe that Bungie has crossed a line.
Criticism is not uncommon within gaming communities, but now even the largest online communities dedicated to Destiny 2 are voicing their concerns about how Bungie is handling this beloved franchise. These complaints have been further magnified with the recent announcement that Bungie is working on a live-service revival of the iconic Marathon franchise, specifically in the form of an extraction shooter.
Some of Destiny 2's most influential content creators, including Aztecross, have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the game's heavy-handed monetization strategy and Bungie's lack of engagement with the community. Aztecross pointed out various instances, such as seasonal price increases, paid Dungeon keys, and event purchases, to demonstrate how far Bungie has pushed the boundaries of the game. This sentiment has been widely supported by the community, as shown by the overwhelming response to Aztecross's post on the game's largest subreddit. Additionally, Aztecross used features from Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, to highlight the stark contrast in the development priorities between the two games, particularly the absence of dedicated servers, leaderboards, and maps that were highly requested by Destiny PvP fans.
Destiny players have been expressing their disapproval of the new monetization features, particularly the Dungeon key. Previously, Dungeons were included as part of larger content releases, but now they have their own separate monetization option, and it seems this arrangement will continue for the foreseeable future.
Adding to the dissatisfaction, Destiny 2: Lightfall received widespread criticism upon its release. Players were disappointed with the lack of impactful narrative revelations and the overall tone of the campaign. Bungie has yet to address many of the concerns raised by the community several months ago, leading to renewed discussions and speculation on how the developer will address the growing wave of negativity.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
