Fans of Destiny 2 have recently been treated to the launch of Season of the Deep, featuring the highly anticipated Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon, as well as the release of the first trailer for The Final Shape expansion at the PlayStation Showcase. In keeping with their approach of offering two Raids and two Dungeons per in-game year, with each season containing one, Bungie has confirmed that players can look forward to another Dungeon in Season 23, which will mark the final season of the Lightfall era. Meanwhile, Season 22 is set to bring back a returning Raid, most likely Wrath of the Machine, with the upcoming 2024 Raid already causing a stir among fans. Bungie's pattern indicates that 2024 will feature a new Raid tied to The Final Shape expansion, as well as a returning Raid from previous Destiny games. However, the selection for the returning Raid is currently uncertain and has left some fans feeling apprehensive.
Destiny 2's The Final Shape Could Feature a Vaulted Raid Instead of Crota's End
The challenge with bringing back Destiny Raids lies in the limited options, with only two remaining: Wrath of the Machine and Crota's End. However, each presents unique obstacles that make porting them to Destiny 2 difficult. For example, designing a new Exotic for Wrath of the Machine would be necessary since its original Exotic, Outbreak Perfected, is already available in the game. On the other hand, Bungie has acknowledged that Crota's End was too short for the scale of Destiny 2, which means significant rework would be required to meet the game's current standards.
Unfortunately, neither option is ideal, and if Wrath of the Machine is chosen for this year, the issue will likely arise again next year. Alternatively, Bungie could revisit vaulted Destiny 2 Raids for reprisals, but this decision would undoubtedly be met with controversy.
The Destiny 2 community is known to be unhappy with reused content from the Content Vault, as paying for content that will eventually be removed and later resold as seasonal missions or Raids is generally frowned upon. The existence of the Destiny Content Vault has been criticized, as it removes a significant amount of vanilla destinations and maps, which many feel is unfair. If Bungie were to bring back an old Raid with no significant changes in 2024, it could cause controversy. Currently, there are only two Raids left from the original game and four vaulted Destiny 2 Raids, making this a possibility in the future. Bungie should be cautious about reprising old Raids unless they undergo significant changes, similar to what happened with the Leviathan in Season of the Haunted. With the Final Shape expansion already facing high expectations from players, Bungie needs to make wise decisions to avoid disappointing their audience.
Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
