The Game-Changing Exotic in Destiny 2 is Shaking Up Season of the Deep Players!

Destiny 2's latest Exotic weapon, the Wicked Implement, has stirred up frustration and challenges for Season of the Deep players, adding an exciting twist to the game

Destiny 2's Season of the Deep is nearing its conclusion, with the seasonal storyline wrapped up, the upcoming Solstice event, and the availability of the Fishing-related Exotic. However, the introduction of Wicked Implement has sparked controversy due to the tedious and RNG-dependent process of acquiring Exotic fish. Furthermore, the newly added secret scout rifle quest has presented its own set of challenges, hindering players from fully enjoying the season. Although Season of the Deep introduced exciting activities like Destiny 2's Deep Dives, which added a roguelike gameplay element, these activities are becoming increasingly difficult to enjoy because of Wicked Implement.

In order to embark on the quest for the new Exotic, players must first fish three different species of unique fish. However, the quest can only be completed in a Deep Dive run, leading to various complications. This issue highlights the fact that Destiny 2's gameplay is still confined to outdated systems that desperately need rejuvenation, particularly in areas such as matchmaking. Although matchmaking in Destiny 2's PvP differs in nature, the game lacks flexibility in the PvE department, thereby limiting the overall experience for players.

How Destiny 2's Wicked Implement Exotic Quest Became a Problem

Destiny 2's Wicked Implement has its own quest that must be completed before players can obtain the Exotic Stasis scout rifle. However, there is often conflict of interest when it comes to Deep Dives, as players who have already finished the quest or do not meet its requirements may participate solely for the activity's loot. On the other hand, players who still need to complete the quest must take different steps and pursue their own paths. This lack of control over matchmaking based on each player's goals is the first issue with the activity's design.

In addition, Deep Dives also offer increased challenges and rewards if players successfully locate and interact with Toland at every depth of the activity. Unfortunately, this can become quite frustrating if each member of the fireteam is after something different or is unaware or indifferent to the objectives of others. As a result, many runs after the introduction of Wicked Implement end with the entire team returning to Orbit. While Destiny 2's Season of the Deep places a strong focus on Deep Dives, it ultimately fails to showcase their potential.

A helpful solution would be to incorporate various matchmaking options for Destiny 2's activities. This would allow players who are interested in completing the Exotic quest for Wicked Implement to be paired with like-minded individuals, while regular Deep Dive runs can remain unchanged. Additionally, Bungie could take it a step further by providing a matchmaking option specifically for Toland-powered runs versus regular runs. Regardless, the Exotic quest's unique requirements add an extra layer of complexity to an activity that already has a lot going on.

Furthermore, Deep Dives can be particularly frustrating to undertake because there is no option to join an ongoing run. This means that if a player decides to leave after the team fails to find Toland, or because they want to attempt the new Exotic quest, the remaining Guardians are left in a bind. They can either try to complete the run on their own or simply return to Orbit, but neither option is ideal. Therefore, it would be beneficial for Destiny 2's The Final Shape and future seasons to avoid overloading activities that are essential to the seasonal experience.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
