Bungie recently announced that the Vex, who have been a part of the Destiny universe since its inception, may become the Guardians' greatest adversaries in the upcoming Destiny 2 DLC, The Final Shape. This expansion aims to conclude the ongoing Light and Darkness storyline while also shaping the game's future.
The Vex are considered to be the most intricate foes in the game due to their long-standing existence and complex origin. Lore books reveal that they were born from the conflict between Light and Darkness during the universe's creation. Escaping a simulated reality created by these opposing forces, the Vex materialized in the real world as Radiolaria, commonly known as Vex Milk. Over time, they transformed into enigmatic, intelligent metal organisms capable of traversing different timelines. Their ultimate quest is to continually expand their influence. Although the Vex have been less active recently, Bungie has hinted that the reason behind this may be unveiled after the events of Destiny 2 The Final Shape.
As per Shacknews, during a roundtable interview, senior narrative designers Nikko Stevens and Robert Brookes shed some light on the potential future of the Vex in Destiny 2. Brookes suggested that players should delve deeper into the Veil Containment mission in order to enhance their understanding. When asked about the Vex taking a more subdued role lately, Stevens explained that they are merely biding their time until the "two God behemoths" (Light and Darkness) finish their battle. According to him, the Vex's mindset is, "I'm going to let them eliminate each other, and then we will observe the aftermath." Additionally, Stevens mentioned that Bungie is adopting a personalized approach with the Vex to ensure their story links with "The Witness' story via the Sol Divisive."
The Books of Sorrow provide the earliest account of the Vex entering the Destiny universe through Crota's pursuit of power. This is when they discovered the Hive's adherence to the Sword Logic doctrine and seemingly found a new purpose. Despite the Sword Logic being a deception told by The Witness to the Hive, they are now more aligned with the Darkness and may also become fixated on its purpose.
This Vex teaser takes the storyline of Destiny 2 in an intriguing direction, showing that there is much more to the game's narrative beyond the events of The Final Shape. The Vex are incredibly intricate beings and operate on principles that transcend the paracausality of the Light and Darkness. As a result, they remain formidable adversaries that the Guardians have yet to fully comprehend.
Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
