Bungie has revealed its future plans for Gambit in Destiny 2, looking ahead to Season 22, The Final Shape, and beyond. Introduced in the Forsaken expansion, Gambit has stirred mixed feelings among Destiny 2 players. While some are fervent supporters of Gambit, others wish that Bungie would remove it from the requirements for weekly rewards. Bungie has been committed to making Gambit an integral part of Destiny 2 thus far, but this may soon change.
In Destiny 2's Gambit mode, two teams engage in a blend of direct and indirect combat. Initially, players face off against AI enemies, collecting motes they drop. At certain mote thresholds, players can invade the enemy team, directly attacking and interfering with their progress. The match concludes once a Primeval is defeated, which is summoned after gathering 100 motes. Gambit also offers various weekly rewards and has its own Infamy progression path, offering exclusive weapons and armor.
In the latest blog post on the state of Destiny 2, Bungie addresses the current state of Gambit and its future plans. Bungie acknowledges that it has not provided much information on Gambit since its overhaul during The Witch Queen release. However, the overhaul did not result in increased player engagement with Gambit. As a result, Bungie has decided to allocate its resources towards the more popular aspects of Destiny 2, thereby diminishing the focus on Gambit in the future.
Nevertheless, despite the reduced priority, Gambit will not be completely abandoned. Bungie has a few updates planned for the year, known as The Final Shape. These updates will include the introduction of new enemy types, namely the Shadow Legion and Lucent Hive, into Gambit. Additionally, the previously removed Cathedral of Scars map will be reintroduced in the latest version of Destiny 2. While these updates may not be extensive, they offer something for Gambit enthusiasts to look forward to.
Gambit enthusiasts will be pleased to know that there are additional changes in store. Starting from Season 22 in late August, Gambit will feature a reduced number of Seasonal Challenges. Moreover, players will have the option to bypass Gambit altogether by completing Weekly Challenges. However, for those who still wish to partake in Gambit, a new Fireteam Matchmaking system will replace the Freelance node to facilitate faster matches, even with fewer Destiny 2 players queuing up.
Despite the ongoing popularity of Destiny 2, not every mode can maintain a consistent player base. While Gambit was an intriguing concept that blended PvE and PvP elements, it appears that players have ultimately shown a preference for either PvE or PvP content. However, it is important to note that Gambit will still be accessible through Destiny 2's final expansion. It simply will no longer be a top priority for Bungie.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
