Set to debut alongside Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion on February 27, 2024, the new shader system will provide players with a more precise representation of how shaders will affect their weapons, vehicles, and armor.
Destiny 2 game director, Joe Blackburn, recently announced a upcoming shader rework during a stream. While not as extensive as other RPG titles such as Starfield or Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2 offers players various cosmetic options to express themselves. Apart from armor sets and weapons, players can utilize the transmog system to modify the appearance of their armor without altering its stats and mods. Another popular method of customization is through ornaments, although acquiring them typically involves using premium currency at the in-game store.
For most players, shaders are a convenient way to change the color of their armor and weapons. Over the years, the shader system has undergone numerous changes - initially starting as a consumable that could run out, to now permanently unlocking shaders through Eververse, completing specific objectives in higher-end activities like Crota's End, or earning them through seasonal vendor progression. However, the system hasn't always been perfect, as a major criticism is that the shader icons often fail to accurately depict the primary colors being applied.
Thankfully, Joe Blackburn, the game director of Destiny 2, has taken note of this feedback and has announced plans to address it. During Datto's "Name That Shader" event on Twitch, Blackburn seized the opportunity to unveil an upcoming shader rework. This revamp aims to improve the iconography of shaders so that they more accurately represent the prominent colors that will be applied when used. The goal is to rectify the current issues with certain Destiny 2 shaders, such as Emrita's Dream, Jacarina, and Amethyst Veil, which currently fail to adequately showcase how they will impact weapons, vehicles, and armor.
Blackburn announced that the team is revamping the icons to ensure that all colors are represented in each shader. The more prominent colors will be given a larger portion, while the hidden colors will also be visible. This new shader system is set to be introduced alongside Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion, which is expected to be released on February 27, 2024.
Meanwhile, players have been striving to obtain the highly sought-after all black shader called Twilight Keepsake. To attain this shader during the Festival of the Lost event, players must complete three objectives and unlock the related Twilight Triumph and Lost Memento. This entails wearing specific masks while undertaking designated activities. Once the triumph is claimed, the memento and shader will be unlocked and can be utilized in weapon crafting.
Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
