This week's Nightfall activity in Destiny 2 takes players back to a Battlegrounds mission on the moon. However, players are encountering significant difficulties with it, especially those attempting Grandmaster runs. Grandmaster Nightfalls have always presented one of the toughest challenges in Destiny 2. While these endgame activities are intended to be demanding, fans argue that the mechanics adapted from Battlegrounds activities create an experience that is not only frustrating but also inherently unfair.
Throughout most of Destiny 2's long lifespan, Nightfall strikes have been just that: strikes. These Nightfall activities are elevated in difficulty and offer better rewards for players seeking a challenge, but they have generally been harder versions of strike activities specifically designed for focused, three-player PvE missions that cater to various difficulty levels. While Battlegrounds activities in Destiny 2 share similarities, they follow a completely different formula compared to the game's strikes. Battlegrounds are typically introduced as seasonal activities and are designed for three players as well. They tend to be more forgiving with respawns and create a chaotic environment with a high density of enemies.
Applying the Grandmaster-level difficulty to a Battlegrounds activity that features rooms with enemies endlessly respawning proves to be more monotonous than challenging. Unsurprisingly, the Destiny 2 community has expressed their discontent with this week's Nightfall, known as the Season of the Risen's PsiOps Battlegrounds mission on the moon. One Reddit user, going by the name Doomestos1, encapsulates the community's grievances in a post, labeling the current Nightfall as a "wearisome ordeal" primarily due to the constant addition of enemies and the lengthy duration required to progress through each section.
Another major issue with the current Nightfall revolves around the boss and Savathun's projections. Savathun's Arc lightning attack has the ability to instantly eliminate players even if they are concealed in cover, presenting a significant problem. Unfortunately, this predicament arises from a well-known and persisting bug in Destiny 2, where enemy damage output is linked to the frame rate. Consequently, higher frame rates can result in quick or immediate demise for Guardians in certain situations.
This isn't the first time Bungie has reused a Battlegrounds activity as a Nightfall activity in Destiny 2. Previously, a particular Battlegrounds mission on Mars received a similar, if not stronger, criticism from fans earlier this year. Regrettably, it seems that the developers did not take much notice of that feedback, as players are encountering many of the same problems once again with this week's Nightfall on the moon.
Destiny 2 is playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
