Destiny 2's Season of the Deep has just begun, and players are already raving about the exciting new weapons and loot combinations. However, the recent PlayStation Showcase quickly stole the spotlight with its surprise teaser trailer for The Final Shape expansion, set to launch in 2024, which will conclude Destiny 2's Light and Darkness saga. The teaser revealed the return of Cayde-6, a character whom players had to say goodbye to in the Forsaken expansion. Fans are eagerly anticipating the chance to reunite with the character, especially since he will be voiced by his original VA, Nathan Fillion. In addition, the community is discussing the Bungie store's new merchandise surrounding the beloved character, which has been made possible by his return. Interestingly, Cayde-6's appearance in The Final Shape confirms the online leaks that emerged months ago. However, be warned: this article contains massive spoilers for Destiny 2's The Final Shape. Proceed at your own risk.
Prior to the release of Destiny 2's Lightfall expansion, leaks surfaced about the Traveler resurrecting a being similar to Rhulk, possibly Nezarec, by shooting a Light beam at the Witness' ship, resulting in the creation of trees. This was confirmed as the introductory cutscene for Lightfall, but did not verify all the remaining leaks about The Final Shape.
According to leaked information, The Final Shape will explore the merging of space and time, resulting in a Valley of Time where all timelines converge. This Valley is likely the "here" teased in Bungie's trailer for the expansion, and Cayde-6's appearance suggests that the Witness is working towards its plan of creating "the final shape." Cayde-6's role as a guide in the Valley of Time was previously mentioned months ago, confirming the leaks.
While not all leaked information may be accurate, the overarching concept is likely consistent with Bungie's plans. The Final Shape will feature a final confrontation with the Witness, as well as a 12-player activity and Raid. Players may also encounter old foes, including Oryx and Rhulk, who appears to lead the Taken.
The fact that Cayde-6 is seen returning on the other side of the triangular portal in the trailer suggests that the leaks are true. However, players will only be able to engage with Cayde-6 in the Valley of Time, and his existence is tied to the merging of space and time, meaning he may not return as Hunter Vanguard. Nonetheless, this unique direction for Destiny 2's upcoming expansion is sure to surprise and excite many players.
Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
