Destiny 2's Season of the Wish has introduced exciting new activities and rewards, as well as a challenging new dungeon called Warlord's Ruin. This three-player raid-like activity is set to be released on December 1, marking the first Friday of the new season. While details about Warlord's Ruin are limited, players can expect to earn exclusive rewards and engage in complex gameplay. As the game's story progresses toward its final expansion, The Final Shape, the significance of Warlord's Ruin within the Destiny 2 universe remains a topic for speculation.
When does Warlord's Ruin release?
Warlord's Ruin can be accessed at the daily reset on Friday, December 1, at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET. Be sure to look out for a game update around that time to ensure you're prepared to participate.
How do you access Warlord's Ruin?
Warlord's Ruin, unlike other content in Destiny 2, is not free, but rather a paid piece of content. To gain access, you'll need to either purchase the Lightfall expansion and its annual pass (usually $100, but currently discounted on Steam for $40), or buy the Lightfall Dungeon Key, which can be found on the Expansions tab of the Eververse Store for 2,000 Silver, or around $20.
What's the place of Warlord's Ruin in the story?
Not much is known about Warlord's Ruin yet apart from the name, but based on Destiny 2 lore, we can intuit a few details about the dungeon.
The dungeon's Collections tab reveals that it will feature Scorn enemies, as indicated by the icon displayed. Additionally, the short description provides some clues: "Discover forgotten stories and unresolved animosities within a decaying Dark Age fortress."
In the backstory of Destiny, the term "warlord" was used to describe some of the predecessors to the Guardians that players encounter in the game. Before the establishment of the Last City or the Vanguard, individuals resurrected with the power of the Light lacked guidance. Some of them used their newfound immortality and magical abilities to become territorial rulers, raising small armies and were known as warlords.
These warlords were generally quite terrible, as their name suggests. They emerged during the Dark Age in Destiny's history, which followed the Collapse that ended the technological Golden Age brought by the Traveler. During this time, humans were scattered and often targeted by the Fallen and other alien forces still present in the solar system. Warlords resembled medieval feudal lords, offering protection at times, while also subjugating and victimizing others. Not all warlords were bad, as Crucible vendor Lord Shaxx was a warlord who worked to protect his people, but many were.
As far as the lore is concerned, warlords are most commonly associated with the Iron Lords, the original group of Lightbearers who preceded the Guardians. The Iron Lords were former warlords who dedicated themselves to protecting humanity and resisting tyrants, engaging in battles against various warlords on multiple occasions. It is therefore likely that Warlord's Ruin could contain a story closely linked to the Iron Lords, including their last member with whom we have had any interaction, Lord Saladin. (Another Iron Lord, Lady Efrideet, technically still exists, but we have not encountered her since the Rise of Iron expansion in 2016.)
What remains unknown is how Warlord's Ruin connects to the current storyline, but there are several possibilities it could explore. The lore of the Lightfall expansion mentioned how inhabitants of Neomuna returned to Earth after the Collapse but chose to remain hidden at the time, largely due to the threat posed by the warlords. By visiting what appears to be the stronghold of a former warlord, we may uncover more information about the Collapse and Neomuna's mysterious Darkness object, the Veil.
We may also want to explore what Savathun did after the Collapse, particularly her involvement with the Veil and her plans to undermine the Witness. While we only have hints about her actions and plans, Savathun's return in the Season of the Witch may shed light on these events. Additionally, there is speculation that if this dungeon is connected to the Iron Lords, it may involve SIVA, the nanomachine plague that led to the downfall of most of the Iron Lords. Although we encountered and addressed SIVA during the Rise of Iron campaign, it has not been mentioned since. Bungie has not shown much interest in revisiting SIVA on a large scale, but isolating it in a dungeon could provide a way to revisit this storyline without it dominating the rest of the game.
Warlord's Ruin rewards
Spoiler Alert: Discover Dungeon Loot Ahead!
Bungie has not yet unveiled all the possible rewards from Warlord's Ruin, and the complete information will not be officially released until the dungeon is live in the game. However, due to a minor bug in the transmogrification system of Destiny 2, we have gained a sneak peek at the dungeon's armor before its official release.
Editor's P/S
As an enthusiastic fan of Destiny 2, I am eagerly anticipating the release of the Warlord's Ruin dungeon. The promise of exclusive weapons, enticing rewards, and captivating additions has me excited to explore this new adventure. I am particularly intrigued by the potential connection to the Iron Lords, as I have always been fascinated by their lore and their role in shaping the world of Destiny.
While I am disappointed that Warlord's Ruin is not free content, I understand the need for Bungie to monetize their game in order to continue supporting it. I am hopeful that the dungeon will be worth the price of admission and that it will offer a challenging and rewarding experience for players. Overall, I am very excited for the release of Warlord's Ruin and I can't wait to see what it has in store for us.
