Destiny 2 Season 22's sandbox will fix the double special ammo drop bug, a long-standing issue in the game that dates back to Season of the Lost.
The bug occurred in Season of the Lost when an ammo modification granted primary weapons unlimited ammunition. This issue was overlooked for a span of two years.
The primary objective of the fix revolves around PvE content. This is because players have resorted to equipping two special weapons simultaneously, owing to the unclear distinction between the ammunition mechanics of special and primary weapons.
As Destiny 2's current season is nearing its end, Bungie is providing insight into some of the changes planned for Season 22's sandbox. One of these changes will fix the issue of double special ammo drops, which were mistakenly thought to be a feature. In a game of this magnitude, it is not uncommon for smaller bugs like this to slip through the cracks, as studios typically focus on addressing more significant issues. Despite not being as severe as other bugs, this particular issue has persisted since the Season of the Lost.
Destiny 2 is currently in the closing weeks of Season of the Deep, allowing players to participate in the Solstice seasonal event. As of now, not much is known about Season 22. However, Bungie has hinted that the season's narrative will revolve around finding Savathun's ghost, Immaru, and resurrecting the Witch Queen to aid in the battle against The Witness. More details about the upcoming season and its plans for The Final Shape will be revealed during the next Destiny 2 showcase on August 22, 2023.
The upcoming showcase will give a detailed overview of the next major expansion and the upcoming season. While focusing on these big changes, the team has also provided some insight into several smaller changes that will be included in the seasonal sandbox update. One of these changes includes the fix for the double special ammo drop bug, which was confirmed by Bungie developers Kyt Kutcha and Mercules on the Destiny Massive Breakdowns podcast. This fix will be part of the Season 22 launch update. It has been revealed that the bug was a previously unnoticed consequence of the ammo change introduced in the Season of the Lost, which gave primary weapons unlimited ammo. This issue remained unaddressed for approximately two years.
The fix primarily targets PvE content. According to the pair, players have been using certain loadouts with double special weapons in specific endgame activities due to the ammo economy of select weapons blurring the line between special and primary weapons. One example they mention is loadouts utilizing trace rifles or the Forerunner exotic sidearm and wave-frame grenade launches, as these weapons have an ammo economy that falls into a gray area. The pair also explain that special weapons in the modern sandbox are mainly intended for "burst-damage phases" against endgame bosses and champions, and can be used alongside primary and heavy weapons.
This change is part of a small list of updates that will be introduced in the upcoming season, which is set to begin in a few weeks. The studio has already provided previews of some notable reworks, with the most significant one being the Season 22 economy and currency changes.
Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
