One player during a playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword noticed a similarity between one of the guardians in the Silent Realm and Rauru from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This is not the first time fans have made connections between Skyward Sword and its open-world successors.
The reception of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has been mixed, with praise for its presentation, characterization, and dungeon design, but criticism for its length, padding, and linearity. However, it should be acknowledged for its lasting impact on future 3D entries, including the implementation of a stamina meter and the expanded use of monster parts and collectible items. Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom also contain references to the lore of Skyward Sword, with all three games taking place in a distant future where the events have become myths and legends.
Reddit user Campachoochoo shared an image of a sleeping guardian in one of Skyward Sword's Silent Realm segments. These guardians have the ability to defeat Link in a single hit if he accidentally awakens them by stepping in a glowing puddle. The particular guardian in the image has an elongated chin with thin, earring-adorned protrusions resembling animal-like ears. Its body structure is similar to Rauru, with a gangly torso, slightly muscular arms, and short legs. It is also seen wearing a cloak over its shoulders.
Many commenters also noticed the similarities and commended Campachoochoo for making the connection. Some pointed out the resemblance between the guardians and the Zonai constructs seen in Tears of the Kingdom. This similarity, combined with in-game lore suggesting that the Zonai are descendants of Hyrule's gods, could suggest an unexpected connection. Others mentioned similarities to other Zelda entities, such as the guardians of the Master Sword in Twilight Princess. Some users simply used the screenshot as an opportunity to reflect on the anxiety-inducing Silent Realms.
The intentional nature of the visual similarities between the guardian and Rauru remains uncertain. In this new era of Zelda games, there are frequent references to the series' history, and the resemblance between the two characters invites speculation about additional connections. This is particularly intriguing given the complex timelines and lore. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is currently accessible on Wii, with a remastered version also available on Nintendo Switch.
