Quagsire vs. Clodsire

The Paldean Wooper was among the initial Pokemon to be revealed in the Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet games. While it shares the Ground type with its Johto counterpart, it replaces the Water type with Poison, resulting in a dual-type Pokemon known as Poison/Ground. Unlike a typical Paldean Wooper, it does not evolve into Paldean Quagsire, but rather transforms into a different species called Clodsire.

Unfortunately, the Water/Ground-type Wooper cannot be found in the wild in Paldea. However, there is a single Johtonian Wooper available in Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet, which requires a trade to obtain. This trade does not occur through the Pokemon Portal or Union Circle, but instead requires players to bring a Paldean Wooper to a specific city located in western Paldea.

Where to Trade Paldean Wooper

Updated on September 24, 2023 by Renri Seong: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion pack for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet has brought exciting changes to the game, including the compatibility of many Pokemon from previous generations with Gen 9. One such Pokemon is the original Water/Ground-type Wooper. Previously, players could only encounter the Paldean Wooper, and they had the option to trade it for a "Johtonian" Wooper with an NPC in Cascarrafa. However, in Kitakami, Wooper is now more commonly found, providing players with an alternative method of obtaining an original Wooper without the need for trading. To reflect these new developments, the following guide has been updated to include the additional ways to catch Wooper in The Teal Mask expansion pack.

Obtaining Paldean Wooper

Rookie trainers have the opportunity to capture a Poison/Ground-type early in the game. The first sighting of the Paldean Wooper can be found near the pond along the path between Los Platos and Poco Path Lighthouse. These Woopers will be at approximately level 5, allowing trainers to catch one before reaching Mesagoza. In case the level 5 Wooper was missed, do not worry. Paldean Woopers are also found in the southern part of Paldea and can be caught at any of the highlighted locations on the provided map image.

The next step is to proceed to Cascarrafa. On the second level of the city, situated between Cascarrafa Gym and the lower level near the Asado Desert, there is a central fountain in the square. Here, players will encounter an NPC who is interested in trading for a Paldean Wooper. (This exchange can be initiated by speaking to the NPC, indicated by a yellow word bubble above her head.) Engage in conversation with her, and she will inquire whether players would like to trade their Paldean Wooper for a Johtonian Wooper.

The Johtonian Wooper, nicknamed (Manchester), is a traded Pokemon. It is currently at level 18 and will gain bonus EXP during battles. Unlike its Paldean counterpart, this Wooper will evolve into Quagsire, a Water/Ground-type, at level 20 instead of Clodsire.

How to Get More Johtonian Woopers

In order to obtain an additional Johtonian Wooper without The Teal Mask DLC, players will need to breed the Wooper acquired through trading. However, it's not a simple matter of placing the traded Wooper alongside a Paldean Wooper. Trainers must ensure that the Johtonian Wooper (or Quagsire) is equipped with an Everstone before embarking on a picnic adventure with either a Ditto or another compatible Pokemon. By using the Everstone, the resulting offspring will be a Johtonian Wooper rather than a Paldean Wooper.

To increase the likelihood of encountering Pokemon Eggs, prepare sandwiches with the Egg Power meal effect. Sandwiches with predominantly sweet ingredients, like fruit, peanut butter, whipped cream, or jam, will possess Egg Power. Additionally, players can acquire "sweet recipes" from the man at the Sandwich Stores throughout Paldea. For those lacking time or ingredients to craft sandwiches, consider purchasing food from restaurants or ice cream stands. Each food item's effects will be clearly stated.

Players should also remember that equipping a Pokemon with an Everstone for breeding will result in the offspring inheriting the parent's nature. For instance, if a Johtonian Wooper parent has a Brave Nature, its offspring will also have a Brave Nature. To alter this outcome, players can create a save file prior to trading with the Cascarrafa NPC. In the event that Wooper doesn't possess the desired Nature, simply soft-reset. Alternatively, players can visit the Chansey Supply store and purchase a Nature Mint. Trainers who are indifferent to Pokemon Natures or EVs need not concern themselves with this aspect.

Where to Catch Wooper & Quagsire in The Teal Mask

Players that have The Teal Mask DLC can access Kitakami, a new region with new and old Pokemon. To do so, they will need to have started the three main storylines of Scarlet/Violet:

Starfall Street

Victory Road

Path of Legends

After arriving in Kitakami, head to Mossui Town to speak to the Caretaker. Along the way, feel free to catch the new Pokemon. Wooper can be found in the rice paddies on Kitakami Road, the path connecting the Bus Stop to Mossui Town. Its level can range from 10 to 60, depending on whether the player has completed the main story of SV. Capturing Wooper is easier with Net Balls, which have a higher catch rate for Bug or Water-type Pokemon due to its Water-typing.

If you don't want to level your Wooper to 20, you can find a Quagsire instead. Quagsire can be found in Fellhorn Gorge near Kitakami Hall, or as a Poison-type Terastallized Quagsire in the Timeless Woods. The Terastallized Quagsire will always be level 55, regardless of whether or not you have finished the main story.

Additionally, you can encounter Wooper and Quagsire in Tera Raids. Wooper appears in 1-Star Tera Raids, while Quagsire can only be found in 4-Star and 6-Star Tera Raids. Keep in mind that to unlock a 6-Star Tera Raid, Scarlet/Violet players must have completed the postgame/Ace Academy Tournament. This will activate a quest that eventually leads to the appearance of 6-Star Tera Raids. These raids are much more challenging than 5-Star Tera Raids, so make sure to bring a level 100 Pokemon with a strong moveset.

Quagsire vs. Clodsire

Quagsire and Johtonian Wooper have more balanced stats compared to their Paldean counterparts, which are known for excelling in HP and Special Defense. Being a Water/Ground-type, Quagsire shares Clodsire's immunity to Electric-type moves. However, it is vulnerable to Grass-type moves, taking 4x damage. While Quagsire's learnset mainly consists of Physical moves like Slam, its well-rounded stats make it capable of utilizing Special moves like Ice Beam effectively.

Quagsire possesses a Type advantage over Clodsire, but it lacks the same level of Special Defense. Its speed is only slightly higher than Clodsire, and although its Special Attack is stronger, Quagsire performs better as a Physical attacker. It is possible that Scarlet/Violet trainers may obtain Johtonian Wooper solely for the purpose of completing their collection.

It is ultimately the players' decision whether or not to include a Johtonian Wooper/Quagsire on their final team in Paldea. As there are numerous Water-type and Ground-type Pokemon, both new and old, it is possible that Quagsire may be overlooked. However, it is important to mention that obtaining the Johtonian Wooper (or its evolution) is not necessary to complete the Paldean Pokedex, but it is required for the Kitakami Pokedex. Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet are now accessible on the Nintendo Switch.
