The touching backstory of Bartholomew Kuma

The journey through time has unveiled the tragic trajectory of Kuma’s life, scarred by the World Government's oppressive regime. Born into a family of pirates, Kuma was captured and forced into slavery with his parents, both of whom perished under the brutal conditions.
Involved in the mass genocide the Celestial Dragons planned to carry out in God Valley, Kuma managed to save his life, as well as that of many other people, by collaborating with Emporio Ivankov and Ginny. Exploiting the chaos that had arisen, the three child slaves were somehow able to escape from God Valley. During the predicament, Kuma ate the Paw-Paw Fruit, obtaining its rare powers.

Kuma and Ginny made their home in the Sorbet Kingdom, Kuma's birthplace, and enjoyed a happy life together for many years. As time went on, Ginny expressed her desire to marry Kuma. However, aware of the potential danger from the World Government due to his past as a Buccaneer survivor, Kuma declined her proposal out of concern for her safety.
As the population grew increasingly frustrated with the reign of King Bekori, the Freedom Fighters made their way to Sorbet with the intention of liberating everyone from his oppressive rule. It wasn't long before Kuma and Ginny made the decision to join their cause, and together they formed the group known as the Revolutionary Army.

Ginny was captured by a Celestial Dragon and forced into marriage, living in slavery for two years. She was released when she contracted Sapphire Scales Syndrome. Despite reaching out to her old comrades, Kuma arrived too late, finding Ginny already deceased. Her tragic fate was made worse by the fact that she had a daughter as a result of the abuse she endured while enslaved.
Devastated by heartbreak, Kuma made the decision to raise Ginny's child as his own. Regrettably, the baby, named Bonney, also suffered from the Sapphire Scales. In order to provide the best care for Bonney, Kuma even decided to resign from the Revolutionary Army.
Six years prior to the current events in One Piece, Kuma received word that Bekori had returned to Sorbet and was determined to carry out his nefarious schemes.
The truth behind Kuma's reputation
Kuma was told by multiple doctors that the Sapphire Scales disease was incurable and that Bonney would likely die within five years. Despite this, she managed to survive and eventually became a prominent pirate.
In One Piece Chapter 1099, it is finally revealed why Bonney no longer suffers from her illness and also sheds light on the events that led to Kuma becoming the king of Sorbet and gaining the notorious title of "The Tyrant."
Such a title has always seemed inappropriate for Kuma, whom Bonney characterizes as a gentle and nurturing father. Not to mention the fact that Kuma used to absorb the pain caused by the various minor illnesses of Sorbet's elderly residents, at the expense of taking it all into his own body.

In reality, the World Government falsely maligned Kuma's reputation. After Bekori, backed by the Celestial Dragons, returned to Sorbet, Kuma defeated the villainous monarch and the Marine officers on his own.
Following this, the people of Sorbet hailed him as their rightful king. Wanting to appease them, Kuma decided to become the new ruler of Sorbet while appointing someone else to govern the nation effectively.
How Kuma became Vegapunk's first Pacifista cyborg
Despite being brutally defeated, Bekori managed to survive the incident. Working with the World Government, the ruthless king started spreading false rumors about Kuma being a tyrannical ruler. After successfully thwarting Bekori's last effort to reclaim the throne of the Sorbet Kingdom, Kuma made the decision to embark on a journey across the seas as a pirate.
Accompanied by Bonney, Kuma, who was now widely known as “The Tyrant”, made their way to Egghead with the hope that Dr. Vegapunk could find a way to cure the Sapphire Scales Syndrome. It was during this time that the scientist was also delving into the potential creation of cybernetically enhanced clone troopers.
Kuma volunteered to serve as the prototype for the project on the condition that Vegapunk would provide a permanent cure for Bonney's life-threatening illness. It's worth mentioning that Vegapunk chose to name his creation "Pacifista" as a nod to Kuma's commitment to peace.

The latest One Piece chapter 1099 reveals some surprising details about Kuma's mysterious and tragic past, shedding light on his transformation into one of the most fearsome members of the Seven Warlords. Additionally, his connection to Saint Jaygarcia Saturn is also brought into question. It's hinted that Saturn may have played a role in Kuma's fate, as hinted by Bonney's accusations towards the Five Elders member. The upcoming chapters promise to disclose more about this intriguing reveal.
Considering the current situation on Egghead, with Bonney trapped in Saturn’s clutches and a seemingly mindless Kuma traveling towards an unspecified location, daughter and father might be about to finally reunite.
Kuma’s backstory builds up the storytelling, emphasizing Saint Saturn as the main villain of Egghead and suggesting that Luffy is destined to free both Kuma and Bonney, eradicating the twisted evilness of the Celestial Dragon. In his Gear 5 form, Luffy would ultimately fulfill the legend of the “Sun God,” Nika, passed down by the Buccaneers from one generation to the next by defeating Saint Saturn.
Stay updated on the ongoing Egghead Incident, a major event that has rocked the world of One Piece. When the flashback concludes and the story returns to the present, significant events are sure to unfold. Keep an eye out for Saturn's potential defeat by Luffy, and stay tuned to One Piece's manga, anime, and live-action as we progress through 2023.
