In Pokémon Horizons, Liko may have been the initial focus of the story, but when it comes to battles, it seems that Roy is emerging as Ash's true successor, particularly in terms of his unconventional but brilliant strategies.
Throughout the original Pokémon anime, Ash was known for his innovative thinking during battles, often utilizing techniques that were not possible in the games. He even created his own technique called the Counter Shield, which involved deflecting attacks using elemental energy. This technique was later adopted by various other characters, including Leon in their final battle. Now, it is Roy who is thinking outside the box. In episode #17 of Pokémon Horizons, he takes on Captain Pikachu with a rather ridiculous yet surprisingly effective combo attack involving his Fuecoco and Wattrel.
Roy's Unorthodox Battle Strategies Are Straight Out of Ash's Playbook
In episode #17, Roy attempts to foster a harmonious relationship between his new Wattrel and Fuecoco. After witnessing Wattrel's increased power due to strong winds, Roy devises a combo attack strategy. He puts his plan to the test by battling against Captain Pikachu, who previously soundly defeated Fuecoco during their training sessions. Roy begins by striking a comical pose, with Fuecoco perched on his head and Wattrel atop Fuecoco. Together, they are launched into the air. Fuecoco further elevates their height with Ember before descending to the ground. Taking advantage of the higher altitude and stronger winds, Wattrel plummets towards Captain Pikachu, successfully knocking off his hat with the force of Wattrel's Spark.
This double battle tactic bears resemblance to a strategy once employed by Ash in previous double battles. During his encounter with Tate and Liza in the Ruby and Sapphire era, Ash had Pikachu ride on the back of his Swellow to shield it from reflected Electric-type attacks. Ash then manipulated thunderclouds overhead to attract a lightning strike, resulting in a significant power boost as they swooped down—a concept akin to Wattrel's power surge in this situation. Both Ash and Roy demonstrate their ability to utilize unconventional weather conditions to enhance their Pokémon's attacks, showcasing Roy's growth as a trainer.
The fans of the anime have always found delight in Ash's unconventional approach to battles. It's truly satisfying to know that this creative mindset will persist in Horizons, even in the absence of Ash. Roy, who is just beginning his journey as a trainer, lacks any formal instruction, allowing him to approach battles in unique ways. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage, as Roy's only means of learning is through firsthand experience. With hopes that Pokémon Horizons will continue providing Roy with opportunities to engage in unorthodox battles, they will be fully prepared the next time they encounter the explorers.
