In Pokémon Horizons, the anime aims to stay true to the Pokémon games by incorporating the exclusive Terastal mechanic from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet into the storyline. This introduces a new game feature to the anime world.
The transformation scene in episode #10 of Pokémon Horizons closely resembles that of the games, adding an element of excitement. Gym Leader Brassius demonstrates Terastallization for the first time by using it on his Sudowoodo to defeat Roy in their first Gym Battle. The mechanic reappears in episode #14 when Friede introduces a Tera Orb, the device required to activate Terastallization. Friede pushes Charizard to its limits, transferring energy to it and transforming it into a Dark-type Pokémon. This proves advantageous as Friede faces off against Spinel, the new villain who controls a Psychic-type Beheeyem remotely. With Charizard's immunity to Psychic-type attacks, Friede manages to counterattack and escape the trap he was caught in.
Pokémon Horizons Impresses With Its Terastallizations
In the games, Terastallization is a game mechanic that allows a Pokémon to change its type during a battle, presenting various strategic opportunities for trainers with a tactical mindset. This transformation is easily identifiable when the Pokémon adopts a crystalline appearance and adorns a distinctive "hat" that indicates its new type. Unfortunately, the mechanic was introduced too late for it to be featured in the anime under Ash, and it can only be utilized in the Paldea region, making its appearance limited until the Horizons characters arrived.
Friede faced a challenging situation with only his Charizard against two opposing Pokémon, but fortunately, he had the Tera Orb. Without this item, the outcome could have been very different, as the Tera Orb granted Charizard immunity to Psychic attacks and removed its vulnerability to Electric attacks. Additionally, the Tera Orb provided Friede with a surprising advantage that allowed him to regain the upper hand. Overall, the Tera transformation made a stellar debut and will likely continue to be a valuable resource now that Friede possesses a Tera Orb.
Pokémon Horizons Is Doing A Great Job At Adapting Scarlet And Violet
Ash's adventures in the Pokémon anime loosely drew from the games, but Horizons is dedicated to providing the most faithful adaptation possible. After witnessing Friede's display of Tera Orb powers, fans can't help but wonder if Captain Pikachu is also capable of Terastallizing. This possibility is undoubtedly something that excites fans. Pokémon Horizons has effectively showcased the Paldea region and the enticing offerings of Scarlet and Violet. It's no surprise that the series seamlessly incorporates the new Terastal mechanic.
