Highlights
The Honkai: Star Rail 1.4 update will introduce a notable decrease in the number of Star Rail Special Passes, resulting in reduced opportunities for free-to-play players to obtain 5-star characters.
These exclusive passes are acquired by regularly engaging with content and cannot be reset once obtained. Players can approximate the number of passes they can earn within each patch cycle.
With a minimum of 90 pulls required to secure a 5-star character, the limited number of pulls available in version 1.4 can be highly frustrating for free-to-play players, potentially causing them to miss out on significant content.
Concerns about the availability of Star Rail Special Passes in Honkai: Star Rail's 1.4 update have arisen among players who wish to obtain a 5-star character. Each update of Honkai: Star Rail offers a limited number of these premium passes to free-to-play players. With great dedication, players can use these passes for a nearly guaranteed chance at obtaining a 5-star character. However, this may change in Honkai: Star Rail after the 1.4 update.
It is crucial to understand that Star Rail Special Passes, which allow players to access limited-time banner Warps, have a restricted quantity for free-to-play players. These passes can be earned through various activities such as daily training, completing story content, and participating in special events and promotions. Once a chance to obtain a premium Star Rail Pass is missed, it cannot be regained. Once a pass is earned through specific content, it does not reset. Therefore, players can determine the number of passes they can earn during each Honkai: Star Rail patch period.
The analysis of the Honkai: Star Rail's upcoming 1.4 update suggests that players will have significantly fewer opportunities to make pulls compared to previous updates. It is estimated that only 76 pulls will be available in 1.4, marking a reduction of over 40 pulls compared to 1.3. This decrease is mainly due to the limited availability of pulls through "Permanent Content" or story completion. Surprisingly, this number is even lower than the previous low of 93.5 average pulls in patch 1.1.
The frustration lies in the fact that, even under ideal circumstances, it takes 90 pulls to guarantee a 5-star character through Honkai: Star Rail's bad luck protection system. However, in reality, players often require more pulls as the system is only triggered after meeting certain conditions. Therefore, the limited number of 76 pulls signifies that many free-to-play Honkai: Star Rail players will miss out on valuable content.
It is important to note that the 1.4 season of Honkai: Star Rail is shorter than usual. On average, players will still receive the same number of weekly pulls as in the 1.1 or 1.2 seasons. However, the content will expire earlier, so the average pulls per week may not be a useful metric. Additionally, there is a possibility that players may receive more pulls than estimated if HoYoVerse decides to distribute them through the mailbox and web events.
It should come as no surprise that a gacha game developer like HoYoVerse would make decisions that encourage players to spend money. Although this is not surprising, it can still be frustrating for dedicated players. All we can hope for is that this is not the beginning of a trend and that the 1.5 season will provide enough opportunities for free pulls, allowing every Honkai player to obtain what they are eagerly anticipating.
Honkai: Star Rail is available now on PC and mobile devices, and launches on PS5 starting October 11.
