Article Overview
Luffy and Shanks' reunion is one of the most anticipated moments in One Piece, but despite both being in Wano, that did not come to be.
Bartolomeo's act of burning Shanks' flag on a protected island belonging to the Red Hair Pirates caused a delay in the long-awaited reunion of Shanks and Luffy. In the One Piece anime, the explanation behind this event has finally been revealed. Despite Shanks' main objective being the search for the One Piece rather than reuniting with Luffy, fans have been eagerly anticipating their meeting and the symbolic return of the straw hat.
Warning: Spoilers For One Piece Episode #1081 In Wano, the long-awaited reunion between Luffy and Shanks has been delayed once again. Despite Luffy's impressive accomplishments, such as defeating Kaido and achieving Gear 5, his reunion with Shanks will have to wait due to the interference of one of Luffy's devoted followers. Recently, after the liberation of Wano, the Red-Haired Pirates, led by Pirate Emperor Shanks, arrived at the borders of the island. As Luffy and his crew celebrate their hard-fought victory against Kaido and Big Mom, there are even members within Shanks' crew who eagerly anticipate their reunion with Luffy.
In episode #1081 of One Piece, Shanks clarifies why he has "no intention of seeing Luffy." The reason behind this revelation is Bartolomeo, a devoted supporter of Luffy and a member of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Bartolomeo daringly sets fire to the Red Hair Pirates flag on an island protected by Shanks, replacing it with the Straw Hats flag. This audacious act not only complicates the long-standing relationship between the Emperor and the Straw Hats but also disappoints fans eagerly awaiting their long-awaited reunion.
Luffy's Number One Fan Might Have Started A War With Shanks
Compared to fans of One Piece, most citizens living across the series' oceans are unaware of the emotional history shared between Luffy and Shanks. Bartolomeo, currently serving as the captain of the second ship in the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, has no knowledge of the mentor who inspired his idol to become a great pirate. Unfortunately, Bartolomeo's actions have caused trouble that could reflect poorly on Shanks's crew if he were to meet up with Luffy.
In chapter #1054 of the manga, Bartolomeo's crimes are mentioned. However, the anime provides additional context, revealing why he acted as he did. It turns out that Bartolomeo was not deliberately attempting to claim new territories for the Straw Hat crew. Instead, he coincidentally stumbled upon an island under Shanks's protection. Upon seeing the Red-Haired Pirate Flag, he exclaimed, "The Emperor of the Sea?! I don't care!" and proceeded to burn it, replacing it with Luffy's own flag. While this plot device may have appeared convenient yet foolish in the manga, the anime provides a better explanation by attributing Bartolomeo's actions to chance and his humorous personality.
Shanks's Goal Is The One Piece, Not A Reunion With Luffy
In One Piece episode #1081, Shanks makes a surprising appearance after a long absence in the anime series. The focus of the episode is mainly on Momonosuke and his Scabbards defending Wano against Admiral Green Bull. Despite this, there is a beautifully animated flashback that shows Shanks reminiscing about the young man he entrusted with his most valuable possession. Additionally, Shanks shocks viewers by announcing his intention to pursue the One Piece, making him Luffy's most formidable rival.
However, Bartolomeo's actions conveniently delay the highly anticipated reunion, as Luffy's journey unfolds and fans witness his transformation into a Pirate Emperor. The anticipation of his meeting with Shanks continues to escalate, promising to become one of the most unforgettable moments in One Piece.

As a Gen Z netizen, I have mixed feelings about the recent revelation regarding Shanks' absence in Wano. On the one hand, I understand that Shanks has his own motivations and goals, and that finding the One Piece is his top priority. On the other hand, I can't help but feel disappointed that we won't get to see the long-awaited reunion between Luffy and Shanks just yet.
I think Bartolomeo's actions were reckless and impulsive, and he didn't think about the consequences of his actions. While I understand that he is a devoted fan of Luffy, he should have been more respectful of Shanks and his crew.
Overall, I'm still excited to see how the story of One Piece unfolds, and I'm sure that the reunion between Luffy and Shanks will be even more meaningful when it finally happens.
