Summary
The trailers for "Ahsoka" suggest that Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian artist and Rebellion hero, may be the actual new Jedi rather than Ahsoka herself.
Ahsoka Tano has been a Star Wars character for a significant period of time prior to her introduction in live-action in 2020. However, she made the decision to depart from the Jedi Order before the culmination of the Clone Wars and no longer identifies herself as a Jedi.
Ahsoka has taken on the responsibility of mentoring Sabine, who exhibits potential Force abilities and has the potential to become a genuine Mandalorian Jedi in the era of the New Republic. Sabine is comparatively fresh to the realm of Star Wars live-action.
Recent teasers for Ahsoka have hinted at the rise of a new Jedi, leaving uncertainty about the identity of this Jedi. While it may seem natural to assume that Ahsoka Tano herself is the rising Jedi, there are indications that Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian artist and Rebellion hero, will be revealed as the true new Jedi in the upcoming Star Wars show.
In the Ahsoka trailers, it has been confirmed that Ahsoka Tano (played by Rosario Dawson) agreed to take on Sabine (played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo) as her apprentice after the events of the Star Wars Rebels animated series. This suggests that Sabine was already in the process of learning to become a Jedi before her falling out with Tano. Consequently, it is highly likely that Sabine, rather than Ahsoka herself (who has a complex history with the Jedi Order), is the aforementioned new Jedi.
Ahsoka Is (Relatively) New To Most Viewers
In terms of live-action, Ahsoka Tano made her debut as a Jedi character just three years ago in 2020's The Mandalorian season 2. However, Ahsoka's journey in the Star Wars universe began much earlier, with her introduction in the 2008 animated series The Clone Wars and later in Star Wars Rebels in 2014. While she may be relatively new to live-action audiences, Ahsoka is not a completely new Jedi and no longer identifies herself as one in anticipation of the upcoming Ahsoka show.
Having left the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars, Ahsoka has lived in the Star Wars galaxy for nearly 30 years without her Jedi identity before her live-action series. Therefore, it wouldn't make much sense for her to be portrayed as a new Jedi in the show's trailers. Although the events of the series may motivate Ahsoka to re-embrace her past as a Jedi, it appears unlikely.
Instead, showrunner Dave Filoni and actress Rosario Dawson have hinted that Ahsoka's journey will transcend her former role as a Jedi during the Clone Wars. There have been multiple suggestions that Ahsoka will undergo a transformative experience in the Force, resembling the evolution of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. In a parallel manner, Ahsoka is poised to embark on a unique path within the expansive galaxy far, far away, rather than simply becoming a Jedi.
Ahsoka Has Been Training Sabine
After Sabine received Ezra Bridger's lightsaber when he vanished into the Unknown Regions and defeated the Imperial leader Grand Admiral Thrawn, it appeared that Ahsoka took on the role of Wren's mentor. However, recent hints have confirmed that Tano eventually decided to part ways with Sabine, just as she did with her own master Anakin Skywalker (who is also set to make a comeback in Ahsoka). Nonetheless, it seems that their training will begin again in Ahsoka as the two embark on a quest to find Thrawn, who is rumored to be returning to the galaxy as the "Heir to the Empire".
It is highly likely that Ahsoka was training Sabine in the ways of the Jedi, not just in lightsaber combat. Sabine, being a skilled Mandalorian warrior, had received lightsaber training from Jedi survivor Kanan Jarrus, as seen in Star Wars Rebels. During this time, Sabine briefly wielded the powerful Darksaber in an attempt to unite Mandalore against the Empire. This has led to theories that Ahsoka's training may help Sabine unlock her hidden Force abilities, making her the true Mandalorian Jedi during the New Republic Era.
While Ahsoka Tano is a known character, Sabine Wren is a new addition to the live-action Star Wars universe. There are hints throughout Star Wars Rebels that suggest she could be a Jedi, but these clues were never fully explored or developed. Because of this, it seems more likely that Sabine Wren will be the "rising new Jedi" mentioned in the Ahsoka trailers. For now, fans will have to wait and see what unfolds for Ahsoka Tano and her apprentice Sabine Wren when Ahsoka's first two episodes premier on August 23rd on Disney+.
