Natalie Portman, who played the role of Padmé Amidala in all three Star Wars prequel trilogy movies, recently revealed that she has not been approached to return to the franchise. Padmé's character underwent a transformation from the enigmatic Queen of Naboo in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace to a valiant senator in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Regrettably, her story ended in tragedy, and no live-action adaptation has revisited her character after Episode III.
During an interview with GQ, Natalie Portman disclosed that she has "no information" about a potential Padmé Amidala comeback and that no one has ever asked her to return to the Star Wars universe.
Natalie Portman has left the door open for a possible return of her character, Padmé. Despite Padmé's death in Revenge of the Sith, there are still opportunities for Star Wars to explore the character, whether it's through flashbacks or stories set during the prequels. It's worth noting that Star Wars has brought back actors Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor, so why not Portman? The possibility of seeing Padmé again is definitely something fans would be excited about.
In recent years, Star Wars has witnessed a resurgence in interest in its prequel trilogy, particularly through the Disney+ Star Wars shows. Alongside animated series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, which predominantly focus on prequel trilogy characters, the live-action shows are also drawing heavily from the prequels. One of the most significant examples of this is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which features the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
Obi-Wan Kenobi felt like a direct sequel to Episode III rather than a prequel to A New Hope, making it a Revenge of the Sith reunion. Although Padmé's presence was felt, Natalie Portman did not reprise her role as Padmé in the show. However, E.K. Johnston's Padmé trilogy of books delved deeper into Amidala's character and added more to it than the prequels did. The novels explored significant moments in Amidala's life and showcased the untold Padmé stories that still exist.
One possible way for Natalie Portman to return as Padmé in Star Wars could be through flashbacks in a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2. Since Padmé played a crucial role in Anakin Skywalker's story, including Padmé flashbacks in Darth Vader's role in season 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi would make it even more exciting. Additionally, a few Galactic Senate flashbacks in Andor season 2 could also bring Portman back as Padmé. The possibilities are endless, and Star Wars can continue its prequels renaissance by bringing back Padmé Amidala in live-action.
