The Ultimate Guide to the Thousand Sunny in One Piece

The Ultimate Guide to the Thousand Sunny in One Piece

The Thousand Sunny, home to the Straw Hats, is a marvel of pirate engineering Built by Franky to replace their beloved Going Merry, this technologically advanced vessel caters to their every need, making it a worthy ship for the future Pirate King

The Thousand Sunny, designed and built by Franky, serves as the Straw Hats' second ship following the demise of the Going Merry in One Piece. This magnificent vessel surpasses its predecessor in size and features, as it was crafted from Adam Wood, the same material used to construct the Oro Jackson, the ship of the former Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Resembling a brigantine, the two-masted ship boasts a lion figurehead with a stylized mane resembling the sun. However, the exaggerated proportions of the mane were mistaken for a sunflower or the sun itself during construction. Behind the figurehead lies a set of crossbones, similar to a Jolly Roger. The figurehead's mouth can open to reveal the Gaon Cannon, which fires a compressed burst of air in the style of an energy beam. Additionally, the lion's mane doubles as a propeller to propel the ship backward. Since the completion of the Enies Lobby Arc in the Water 7 Saga, the Thousand Sunny has served as the Straw Hats' primary home and mode of transportation, accompanying them on their journey to each successive island in the Grand Line.

From The Ashes Of The Going Merry

The Going Merry, the Straw Hats' cherished first ship, was created by Kaya's butler, named Merry, and gifted to the crew as a token of gratitude for their protection of Syrup Village from the Black Cat Pirates, led by the deceitful Captain Kuro. The ship's sentimental value only increased as it accompanied the crew on their travels to the Grand Line, Arabasta, and Skypiea, and it even developed a distinct personality. Despite Usopp's diligent efforts to repair the ship, it suffered extensive damage and wear and tear, prompting the crew to seek the expertise of the renowned shipwright Iceburg in Water 7. However, after assessing the ship, Iceburg declared it beyond repair, leading the crew to reluctantly retire the vessel and commission a new one. This decision caused Usopp to vehemently protest, as he was emotionally attached to the ship as Kaya's parting gift to him. In defiance of his captain's decision, Usopp engaged in a physical altercation with Luffy, resulting in his temporary expulsion from the crew.

After their successful rescue of Robin and the defeat of CP9, the Straw Hats found themselves surrounded by Marine ships intent on capturing them. In a dramatic turn of events, the Going Merry arrived just in time to save the crew. Sadly, this would be the ship's final voyage. The crew bid a heartfelt farewell to their beloved vessel, giving her a Viking funeral as they listened to her speak for one last time. Usopp apologized for his mistakes and was welcomed back into the crew while Franky pledged to create a new ship that would honor the Going Merry's spirit.

Catered To The Straw Hats' Every Need

Upon their arrival at Water 7, the Straw Hats presented Franky with an extensive list of demands for their new ship before embarking on their mission to rescue Robin from Enies Lobby. Franky, who had obtained some rare Adam Wood prior to meeting the crew, agreed to build the ship according to their specifications, which included a variety of unique features tailored to each member's interests. These features ranged from an aquarium bar and crow's nest to a survey room and sizable library. Additionally, the ship boasts advanced technology and specialized workrooms for Franky and Usopp, as well as a sick bay and observation deck complete with Nami's mikan trees and Robin's flower garden. The quarters for men and women are located on the first and second floors respectively, each with their own washrooms. All in all, the ship is a true masterpiece crafted by the skilled shipwright Franky.

Sanji's culinary skills are showcased in the restaurant-style kitchen dining room on the ship's second floor. The spacious area reflects the Straw Hats' elevated status in the world of One Piece. The deck above features a series of terraces, including a lawned area, slide, and swing. The helm, located at the front of the ship, has a Log Pose built into a metal pillar behind it. Multiple hatches provide direct access to the Soldier Dock System, which houses the ship's most powerful weaponry.

A Ship Worthy Of The Pirate King

The Sunny, designed for the future Pirate King, boasts an impressive arsenal of weaponry, starting with a total of 16 cannons. Positioned on either side of the ship are seven cannons each, while two additional cannons are strategically located at the front and back. The front-facing Gaon Cannon is situated within the mouth of the lion figurehead, while the rear-facing Coup de Burst has the unique ability to propel the ship up to one kilometer into the air, providing quick escape opportunities. Both cannons rely on cola for power, with the Coup de Burst also serving to stabilize the ship and prevent any backward rocking caused by the Gaon Cannon's use.

Franky's design for the ship boasts the Soldier Dock System, a turntable consisting of six compartments equipped with essential devices and weapons for the crew. The external representation of the system includes two enormous numbered plates on either side of the vessel. The six items featured are Paddle Wheels, the Shiro Mokuba II Waver, the Mini Merry II shopping boat designed in the style of the Going Merry's figurehead, the Shark Submerge III submarine, the Kurosai FR-U IV motorcycle, the Brachio Tank V, and an Inflatable Pool in the sixth and final compartment. The Kurosai FR-U IV and the Brachio Tank V can combine in a spectacular act of "docking" to form a colossal robot, the Iron Pirate "General Franky," which is the ship's most potent weapon and Franky's ultimate trump card in combat. With all these impressive features, the Thousand Sunny is undoubtedly a ship worthy of the future Pirate King. Jinbe, a skilled helmsman, is leading the Straw Hats as they sail into the final saga of One Piece, showcasing the ship's full potential.
