Bounties in One Piece have always sparked heated debates among fans. After the intense battle in Onigashima, where Kaido, Big Mom, and their followers were defeated, the series revealed the new bounties for Monkey D. Luffy, Eustass Kid, and Trafalgar D. Water Law.
In One Piece episode 1080, titled A Celebration Banquet! The New Emperors of the Sea!, it was revealed that Luffy, Kid, and Law were all given bounties of three billion berries. As prominent members of the Worst Generation Supernovas, the captains of these three crews are now locked in competition.
However, Luffy has unquestionably displayed his superior strength compared to both Kid and Law, surpassing them in every aspect.
Expectedly, numerous fans expressed their dissatisfaction with Kid and Law sharing the same bounty as Luffy. This thread aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of this situation.

One Piece episode 1080 highlights Luffy, Kid, and Law's incredible new bounties, but something doesn't add up
Luffy is lightyears ahead of both Law or Kid
Luffy, Kid, and Law are rivals, but their might is worlds apart (Image via Toei Animation, One Piece)In One Piece, there are various rivalries that each have their own unique dynamics. These rivalries serve as a driving force for characters to strive for excellence and improvement. However, it's important to note that just because two or more characters are competing for the same goal, it doesn't necessarily mean they are on equal footing or comparable in strength.
When characters have differing accomplishments and are portrayed differently in the narrative, it signifies that they are meant to be significantly different in terms of strength, despite their shared goal or similar portrayals. One such example of this is the relationship between Luffy, Eustass Kid, and Trafalgar Law, as highlighted in episode 1080 of One Piece.
While there's no doubt that Law and Kid are formidable pirates, it's clear that they pale in comparison to Luffy, who surpasses them in every aspect. As a result, it's easy to comprehend why most fans were dissatisfied with all three of them having the same bounty.
Luffy stands head and shoulders above the rest. (Image via Toei Animation, One Piece)Luffy's bounty was significantly higher than Kid and Law's, being three times higher at one and a half billion berries compared to 470 million berries and 500 million berries, respectively, before the Wano Arc. However, in Wano, Luffy showcased an exceptional battle performance that far surpassed their abilities. Additionally, Luffy achieved the revered Yonko status, a feat that Kid and Law could not attain.
Given these circumstances, it is illogical for Kid and Law to experience a much greater increase in their bounties compared to Luffy. This discrepancy lacks objective reasoning, especially when considering that Luffy's overall combat prowess is on par with the combined strength of Kid and Law.
Luffy emerged victorious in a one-on-one battle against a formidable opponent, Kaido, while Kid and Law managed to barely defeat a less powerful adversary, Big Mom, in a two-on-one confrontation. Furthermore, Luffy achieved a fair and square triumph over Kaido by overpowering him in a direct clash, rendering him incapacitated.

While they managed to inflict significant injuries to Big Mom, it was not enough to incapacitate her. Despite sustaining damage, she remained conscious and resilient throughout the battle. Ultimately, her defeat came about when Kid and Law's strikes forced her into a precarious position from which they themselves couldn't recover.
While still a noteworthy accomplishment, it cannot be denied that Luffy's individual prowess far surpasses even that of Kaido, a formidable fighter known to be stronger than Big Mom. In fact, after the climactic battle, Luffy was hailed as a Yonko, a title that wasn't even considered for either Kid or Law.
Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law (Image via Toei Animation, One Piece)Luffy commands a crew that surpasses those of his supposed rivals in strength. His trusted first mate, Roronoa Zoro, proves to be a formidable opponent, easily matching the abilities of both Kid and Law. In fact, Zoro's exceptional skill suggests that he surpasses both captains in prowess.
Their true potential was revealed during the intense clash between the Worst Generation Supernovas and the mighty Emperors. In this battle, Zoro notably outshined his counterparts, showcasing his unmatched abilities.
Later on, Zoro mastered the Advanced Conqueror's Haki, surpassing the Devil Fruit Awakenings of both Kid and Law. Haki is commonly depicted as a power that exceeds even the abilities of Devil Fruits. Contrary to Luffy and Zoro, who possess innate Conqueror's Haki, Kid lacked the strength to develop his Haki to an advanced level. As for Law, he has yet to even attain the basic stage of this ability.
Toei Animation's image features Luffy, Zoro, Law, Kid, and Killer from the anime series One Piece. In terms of strength, the Straw Hat crew's third- and fourth-ranked members, Sanji and Jinbe, are equally formidable as Killer and Bepo, who respectively serve as Kid and Law's second-in-command.
Likewise, it seems that Franky, Robin, and the rest of the Straw Hats surpass the members of the Heart Pirates and the Kid Pirates in terms of strength. Consequently, although Kid and Law may have a strong rivalry with Luffy, the latter stands on a completely different level in terms of personal skills and overall achievements. This rivalry is highly imbalanced, to the extent that it is completely one-sided.
The intriguing but flawed system of bounties
From a powerscaling perspective, there isn't much to comment on. It's difficult to justify why Luffy, Kid, and Law all received identical bounties. However, this seemingly illogical outcome can be attributed to a specific explanation intricately tied to the world of One Piece.Don't confuse bounties in One Piece with power levels. Bounties don't indicate a character's strength; instead, they reflect the perceived threat level by the World Government.
The value placed on an individual's life also relies on their actions against the World Government, as well as the government's willingness to publicize and quantify those actions in a specific manner.
Critics of One Piece often argue that characters often receive bounties that are either too low or occasionally too high for their actions. The issue stems from the fact that bounties are determined by a multitude of factors that differ from case to case.
Thus, comparing bounties in One Piece becomes challenging due to the varying parameters that determine the reward issuance. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Although bounties are an intriguing concept, the way One Piece developed it is deemed inappropriate.
Luffy's first bounty in the One Piece series (Image via Toei Animation, One Piece)Not only do they not accurately assess an outlaw's personal strength, but they may also fail to accurately convey the true level of threat posed by the individual, leading to either an overestimation or underestimation. The bounties assigned to Luffy, Kid, and Law recently exemplify the ambiguous and confusing nature of these assessments.
In an attempt to conceal the defeat of Kaido and Big Mom, the World Government made an effort to keep Luffy's extraordinary accomplishments hidden from the public eye. This was done to ensure that people remain unaware that this young pirate is the reincarnation of the legendary Joy Boy.
In an effort to achieve this, the Five Elders endeavored to alter the depiction on Luffy's wanted poster, replacing the image showcasing his Gear 5 form with an alternative one that does not feature his Nika-like transformation. Additionally, they made attempts to eliminate the initial D. from the name written on the poster.

Additionally, instead of accurately calculating the updated rewards based on the past bounties and considering the individual contributions of each fighter in battles, the Elders divided the total bounty of approximately nine billion berries obtained from Kaido and Big Mom equally among Luffy, Kid, and Law.
The three captains, despite their unique strengths, received an equal reward for simply leading their respective crews in the alliance.
Disregarding Luffy's impressive accomplishments, skills, and abilities, the World Government intentionally aimed to diminish his importance.
The bounties of Kid and Law would have been in the vicinity of two billion, had circumstances been different. Additionally, Luffy's bounty would have far surpassed the staggering sum of four billion. The Eleven Supernovas of the Worst Generation (Image via Toei Animation, One Piece)
Now a Yonko leading one of the most powerful crews in circulation, Luffy is a formidable fighter who possesses advanced versions of all three types of Haki, including the Color of Conqueror. Additionally, he possesses exceptional powers of Nika. Even a bounty of four billion berries falls short in describing the threat Luffy represents.
Among the young rookies, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates stands on a level of his own. While Law and Kid are powerful pirates in their own right, they never had a chance to compete with Luffy. His true rivals, in the pursuit of the One Piece, are entirely different.
Kid and Law's attempts to challenge Shanks and Blackbeard to one-on-one battles ended in crushing defeats, which revealed that their earlier victory against Big Mom was largely due to the advantageous two-versus-one situation. It became apparent that without such numerical superiority, they lack the strength to take on Yonko-level opponents, let alone defeat them, despite having bounties equivalent to Luffy's.
