One Piece star Taz Skylar shares his desired duration for Netflix's adaptation of the popular anime series. The first season of the live-action adaptation will consist of 8 episodes, following Monkey D. Luffy's journey to become the King of the Pirates. It is worth noting that the One Piece anime is renowned for its extensive length, currently standing at 1,066 episodes.
In an interview with Collider, Skylar, who portrays Sanji, expresses his wish for the One Piece live-action TV series on Netflix to continue until all those involved in its production are satisfied. Read on to discover Skylar's exact words below:
I'd like it to go for exactly as long as it takes to feel like it has reached a satisfying conclusion for all of us—by "us," I mean the greater collective of the five of us and every individual involved. I want everyone to feel proud of where we ultimately end up. I strive for it not to end prematurely, yet also not to drag on. This is my vision.
How Much Of One Piece Will Netflix's Adaptation Cover?
The One Piece live-action trailer unveiled that the series will commence with the Romance Dawn Arc, which serves as the inaugural arc in the One Piece anime. Numerous scenes featuring well-known characters such as Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji were extracted from the East Blue Saga, encompassing the initial sequence of arcs that introduce the Straw Hat Pirates. Consequently, it is highly probable that season 1 of One Piece will faithfully adapt the anime's East Blue Saga, which spans an impressive 61 episodes.
Given the immense length of the One Piece anime, it appears doubtful that the live-action adaptation will be capable of encompassing the entire series. This is due to the higher cost of live-action production compared to animation, as well as the need to consider factors such as actors aging or becoming unavailable for future seasons. If the live-action One Piece were to adapt one saga per season, it would require up to season 11 to accomplish this feat. However, later sagas like the Wano Country Saga contain significantly more episodes than the East Blue Saga, thus necessitating multiple seasons for a faithful adaptation.
A potential conclusion for the live-action One Piece adaptation could be the Summit War Saga, which serves as the final saga prior to a time jump in the series. In the One Piece anime, the final episode of the Summit War Saga is episode 516. This storyline could be reimagined as a suitable ending point for the live-action series, possibly maintaining a manageable number of seasons to avoid major complications. Currently, Netflix's One Piece appears to be starting on a smaller scale with the East Blue Saga, introducing the Straw Hat Pirates in a live-action format upon its premiere on August 31.
