Harvey Guillén, the voice actor for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, discusses the possibility of returning for Shrek 5. The Last Wish, a sequel to the 2011 film, was released in 2022 and brought back Antonio Banderas as Puss from Shrek 2. Guillén joined the cast as Perrito, a small dog who becomes Puss' friend and ally, leading to both critical and commercial success. With Shrek 5 in the works, fans may see more beloved characters return.
Guillén shares with ComicBook.com his belief that Perrito could bring a fresh dynamic to Shrek 5, as there is still much untapped potential in the character. While Guillén is not privy to any details about the sequel, he expresses his willingness to reprise his role. Read his full statement below regarding the possibility of returning for Shrek 5:
I want to hear Perrito's origin story "Oh, absolutely. 100%. I mean, I think we want to hear, I want to hear Perrito's origin story. When did that whole thing happen with the sock? I want to know a little bit of a backstory there and what happened, and how he got that scar on his tummy. I still don't know how he got that. If you look at the poster he's lifting up his sweater, he has a little scar on his tummy, and I was like, how did you get that?"

Although Shrek 5 has not been officially confirmed or given a release date, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri indicated in spring 2023 that his company and creative partner DreamWorks Animation were interested in bringing back the popular animated franchise to the big screen. Meledandri mentioned that discussions were ongoing with original Shrek cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, but no concrete announcements about the film have been made since.
If Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona all make a comeback, it is likely that Banderas will also reprise his role as Puss, a staple character in the franchise. Whether Perrito will return remains uncertain, as it may depend on the direction of the fifth film's storyline. The conclusion of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hints at a grand reunion in the future, as Puss, Perrito, and Kitty (Salma Hayek) embark on a journey to the Kingdom of Far Far Away with the promise of reconnecting with "some old friends".
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish can be streamed on Netflix at present.
As for Shrek 5, details remain scarce. However, considering it has been close to a year since Meledandri's remarks, there may have been significant progress made behind the scenes that has not yet been revealed. Regarding a possible release date, the movie could potentially premiere in 2025, though it might also be pushed to 2026 depending on the pace of development. It is evident that Guillén is hopeful for Perrito to have a role if Shrek 5 comes to fruition.

The character has indeed captured hearts, and his backstory, particularly the origin of his sock and tummy scar, would be fascinating to explore. Guillén's desire to reprise his role is understandable, as Perrito's loyalty and humor brought a fresh energy to the Puss in Boots sequel.
The prospect of a Shrek 5 reunion with the original cast is thrilling, but the possibility of Perrito joining the adventure adds an extra layer of excitement. The conclusion of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hinted at a grand gathering, and Perrito's presence would undoubtedly contribute to the nostalgia and charm of the fifth installment. While the release date remains uncertain, Guillén's enthusiasm and the ongoing discussions with the original cast members suggest that Shrek 5 could be a reality sooner rather than later.
