As has been reiterated countless times, creating a live-action adaptation of One Piece was questioned by many. However, it should not be seen as a mere adaptation, but rather as a heartfelt tribute to the dedicated fans and creators who have shaped this beloved franchise. One Piece manages to successfully capture this essence, albeit with mixed results. This particular episode skillfully portrays the melancholic aspects of an otherwise jovial series.
Taking charge as the final director of the season is Josef Wladyka, renowned for his work on the gripping 2014 thriller, Dirty Hands. He has also directed episodes for acclaimed series Narcos and Tokyo Vice. Returning as writers are Tiffany Greshler and Ian Stokes, accompanied by Allison Weintraub and Lindsay Gelfand, who are also the show's executive story editors.
Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji have all had their respective backstories revealed in previous episodes. Now, it's Nami's turn to share her tragic past. When Nami was a young girl, her quiet village came under the oppressive rule of Arlong's fish-man pirates. Arlong's presence has caused immense suffering for the villagers, as he continuously exploits their resources, leaving the town and its surroundings in constant jeopardy. Faced with a desperate situation, Nami has resorted to giving Arlong the map of the Grand Line in order to ensure the safety of her home, placing herself back into servitude under the fish-man.
In an effort to rescue Nami and reclaim the stolen map, the Straw Hats strike a deal with the remnants of Buggy's crew. However, locating Nami proves to be a formidable challenge. When they finally find her, persuading her to rejoin their crew becomes an uphill battle. Zoro believes they should follow her advice and leave her behind, while Usopp is willing to say anything to distance himself from the dangerous situation. Sanji, on the other hand, strongly believes that Nami is in need of salvation. However, for Luffy, the reason behind Nami's actions is irrelevant. All he knows is that she is his friend, and that's all that matters to him.
Koby has received a significant amount of screen time in this series, particularly as he is paired with Axe-Hand Morgan's son, Helmeppo. Although they are Marine cadets, Koby impresses Garp and becomes a valuable assistant throughout the series. Helmeppo's reasons for accompanying Koby are unclear. While they contribute slightly to the search for Luffy, their part of the story is not particularly engaging. The real highlight of the Marine side of the conflict is Garp, who struggles with conflicting desires for his grandson's freedom and safety. It would be a waste if these storylines do not amount to anything in the final episode.
This episode showcases an often overlooked aspect of the source material. Shōnen anime is typically defined by its fight scenes, which are usually the main attraction of the genre. One Piece features some of the best fight scenes in modern anime, with numerous options to choose from, many of which are excellent. Prior to these major fights, the show takes time to establish the villains' wicked behavior. There is often a city or civilization suffering under their rule, providing context for the violence and a satisfying conclusion when their evil is defeated. One Piece excels at providing the necessary background before the cathartic battles. Episode 7, titled "The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo," encompasses this experience in one episode, complete with the inclusion of sad children, a troubled village, and a corrupt marine.
On reflection, the execution of this show's pacing was brilliantly orchestrated. Each episode delivers those highly anticipated, must-see moments that anime enthusiasts crave. From the very first Gum-Gum Pistol, to Shanks's symbolic handing over of his hat, and the exhilarating introduction of the Going Merry, the journey of the crew setting sail, Zoro's unwavering vow after battling Mihawk, and so much more. In this particular episode, we witness the iconic scene where Luffy bestows his hat upon Nami. It is a shot-for-shot recreation that still manages to evoke the same intensity and emotion, beautifully capturing every minute detail. However, its only flaw lies in the timing. In the anime, this heartfelt exchange takes place just moments before Luffy confronts Arlong, with Arlong himself witnessing Nami severing her tattoo. Yet, in the live-action adaptation, Luffy delivers the speech and places the hat on Nami's head, but the fight itself is still a long way off. This unfortunate alteration weakens an otherwise exceptional moment.
The Straw Hat crew is now facing their ultimate showdown. The scene is prepared, the stakes are raised, and Luffy is seething with fury. It is time to witness the culmination of their journey. Despite not reaching perfection in its execution, One Piece has provided a delightful and enchanting adventure. Let us remember it as a worthy tribute to a cultural phenomenon.
