When reminiscing about her 2009 fling with Drake, SZA didn’t exactly remember it as a storybook romance.
"We were quite young," disclosed the 33-year-old singer to Rolling Stone in this week's cover story, released on Tuesday, October 3. "There wasn't intense passion or anything. It had youthful vibes. It was remarkably juvenile."
Drake, who recently joined forces with SZA, had previously incorporated their relationship into his music in 2020.
Drake rapped on "Mr. Right Now," a track featuring 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, about wanting to engage in intimate activities while listening to SZA's music. He also claimed to have dated SZA in 2008 and suggested that they could still be involved if she was comfortable with it. Following the song's release, SZA went on X (formerly Twitter) to clarify the accuracy of Drake's statements regarding their past relationship.
"It was actually 2009 lol," she wrote. "In this instance, the poetic license of rapping in a particular year was important lol. I believe he simply innocently rhymed 08 with wait. Anyone who truly knows me and was present during that time can confirm... it's all about love and peace."
SZA followed up her initial tweet with a second message, clarifying that she corrected the year because she didn't want anyone to think there was anything inappropriate or weird happening. "Completely innocent. It feels like a lifetime ago."
Following their separation in 2009, the Grammy victors have maintained a positive relationship. Recently, the pair unveiled their initial joint venture titled "Slime You Out," a track masterminded by Drake and co-written alongside SZA. Serving as the second single from his highly anticipated eighth studio album, For All the Dogs, the record is scheduled for release on Friday, October 6th.
Although the song quickly reached the top of the Billboard charts, not everyone was pleased with its artwork. Prior to its release, Drake and SZA provided a teaser for the single, featuring a photo of Halle Berry covered in slime at the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards.
In response, the 57-year-old Oscar winner expressed her disagreement with the use of her image. Taking to Instagram, she revealed that when Drake's team approached her for permission to use the picture as the single's cover, she declined.
SZA and Drake's brief romance continues to attract attention, but in her Rolling Stone cover story, the "Kill Bill" artist opens up about her love life even further. She reveals that she was previously engaged to a partner, with whom she spent 11 years before calling off the engagement in 2018. When it comes to her outlook on dating now, SZA acknowledges her own value goes beyond just her looks.
“I feel like I have more to offer than the way I look and my energy, but it’s like, I’m human, that s—t is all-encompassing,” she said.
