Philippe Clement has been appointed as the new manager of Rangers until 2027. The 49-year-old will convene with the team on Monday to commence preparations for his debut match as Gers' boss against Hibernian at Ibrox on Saturday.

After a short tenure at Monaco, Clement has joined the team to replace Michael Beale, who was dismissed two weeks ago after leading the team for only 10 months. Clement had a prosperous period in Belgium, winning three consecutive Pro League titles at both Genk and Club Brugge.

After being named the 19th permanent manager of Rangers Football Club, I feel incredibly honored and would like to express my gratitude to the board. I am thrilled at the prospect of achieving success in four competitions throughout this season and beyond, particularly at such an iconic club in Europe.

What does Clement bring to Rangers?

I can't wait to connect with the players in the upcoming days and engage with our loyal supporters at the Hibernian home match next Saturday, as we unite in our pursuit of building a triumphantly victorious Rangers.

Speaking to We News, Belgian Football Consultant Scott Coyne said:

"Rangers would be getting a proven winner both as a player and as a manager.

He has achieved numerous Belgian titles as a player and, in recent years, secured three consecutive titles as a manager with Genk and Club Brugge. I believe he possesses the mindset to enter this setting and fully seize the opportunity. He comprehends the importance of achieving significant victories.

"He's familiar with coming into clubs that are in a degree of disarray, restoring a sense of order and getting them firing again. He's used to getting results quickly.

During his initial coaching stint at Beveren in Belgium, he made a profound impression that led to his departure after just six months, as Genk swiftly recruited him and witnessed a rapid transformation under his guidance. Additionally, his successful return to Club Brugge resulted in consecutive title victories. Known for his preference for possession-based play, he also incorporates a high defensive line and encourages his teams to exploit spaces behind the opposition.

"The challenge he will face in Scotland is that many teams adopt a defensive strategy against Rangers, employing a compact defensive block. Consequently, he will need to explore various tactics to create openings and exploit available spaces. Philippe would surely find interest in certain players within the Rangers squad who not only align with his system but also possess the ability to captivate viewers and enhance the team's performance."

He excels in extracting the maximum potential from players while effectively communicating his expectations. Renowned for his ability to simplify matters and foster a solid adherence to standards, he emphasizes the discipline aspect, which is crucial when managing a club of this magnitude.

Undoubtedly, he will approach this opportunity with enthusiasm. He recognizes that time is of utmost significance, as it is a luxury not readily afforded. Swift results are expected, and he is well aware of this.

Rangers chairman John Bennett (left) and CEO James Bisgrove (right) held talks with candidates in London

Just a little over 24 hours after Rangers were jeered off the field due to a 3-1 home loss against Aberdeen, the chief executive, James Bisgrove, and chairman, John Bennett, decided to terminate Beale's contract along with his support staff.

The focus swiftly shifted to a long list of potential replacements that had been carefully compiled over the course of several months as part of the club's succession planning procedure.

As various candidates were considered and proposed to club executives - with Steven Davis temporarily leading the team - important decision-makers dedicated time to explore potential options in their quest for the most suitable long-term choice for Rangers.

News reports disclosed that certain favorites among bookmakers, including Frank Lampard, John Eustace, and Scott Parker, were not included in the final shortlist as the concluding interviews took place in London this week.

Kevin Muscat, who achieved a domestic treble as a player at Ibrox in 2003, was one of the final two candidates being considered. He triumphed in the A-League with Melbourne Victory and subsequently secured the J-League title with his current team, Yokohama F Marinos. Nevertheless, following discussions over the weekend, the leadership at Ibrox has chosen to support Clement in guiding Rangers towards domestic success once again.

Graeme Souness was involved in the process to find Rangers' new manager

Chairman Bennett said: "I would like to offer my warm congratulations to Philippe as he becomes our 19th manager.

"His appointment marks the conclusion of a meticulous and thorough recruitment process. Under the guidance of our CEO James Bisgrove, the board members, and former Rangers player and manager Graeme Souness, a dedicated team has devoted the past 10 days to conducting interviews with several highly qualified candidates. Each individual underwent a rigorous interview and vetting process. We would like to express our gratitude to all candidates for their interest in the position.

Philippe emerged as the exceptional candidate, surpassing all the essential criteria. His track record of winning titles reinforces our confidence in his leadership, and we extend our best wishes for his success as he guides us into the future."

What is coming up for Rangers?

Clement will meet the Rangers squad on Monday before his first game against Hibernian on Saturday

The 2023/24 season began poorly for Rangers under Beale, as they suffered three league defeats in just seven games. This disappointing performance ultimately led to Beale's dismissal. As a result, the team currently finds themselves trailing seven points behind Celtic, who are leading the Scottish Premiership.

In addition, they failed to secure a place in the Champions League following a devastating 7-3 overall defeat to PSV in the playoffs.

As a result, Rangers now find themselves competing in the Europa League. However, a surprising loss to Aris Limassol in Cyprus, under the guidance of interim manager Steven Davis, has left the Gers tied with Sparta Prague, Aris Limassol, and Real Betis in Group C, all on three points.

Clement will make his league debut at Ibrox on Saturday against Hibernian. Afterward, Rangers will travel to the Czech Republic to face Sparta Prague in the Europa League on October 26. This will be followed by league matches against Hearts and Dundee in the subsequent six days, leading up to a trip to Hampden Park on November 5.

Rangers' upcoming fixtures

Hearts are once again the opponents, but this time a victory would secure a place in the Viaplay Cup final and offer Clement the opportunity to claim the first domestic trophy of the season. It is a competition that Rangers have not emerged victorious in since 2011.
