Rickie Fowler has clarified his decision not to join fellow golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in investing in Leeds United. He expressed his willingness to invest in a Premier League football club, despite withdrawing from a potential deal due to Leeds' relegation from the top flight.
Spieth and Thomas have invested in the Elland Road team after acquiring shares in new owners 49ers Enterprises. Fowler faced backlash from a few fans at The Open on Friday, being labeled a "coward" for his choice. The 34-year-old golfer addressed this matter, stating, "That's already taken care of," following the conclusion of his third round at The Open on Saturday.
"Hopefully everything will work out smoothly with JT and Jordan's involvement. Although my financial team didn't recommend it, we ultimately decided not to pursue it.
"Nevertheless, my interest remains unwavering, and there could be other potential opportunities available."
Football, or soccer as it is commonly known, may not have the same level of popularity in the United States. However, many of us who may not be ardent followers still recognize and admire the sport at its pinnacle.
Given such opportunities, I am eager to be involved in something of that nature. The future will reveal what lies ahead.
When asked if he had a preferred team, Fowler responded, "I don't have one specifically, but if there's any financial involvement, I'll definitely offer them significant support. I can be swayed!"
Fowler improved his score at Royal Liverpool on Saturday with a remarkable four-under-par 67 despite the wet conditions in the morning.
49ers Enterprises complete takeover from Andrea Radrizzani
Leeds United made an announcement earlier this week stating that the EFL has granted its approval for the club's sale to 49ers Enterprises, an American investment group. The chairman and majority shareholder, Andrea Radrizzani, who has held this position since 2017, agreed to sell his controlling stake in the club last month. The deal has been estimated to value the club at approximately £170m.
49ers Enterprises, which owns NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers, has steadily increased its stake in Leeds since becoming a minority shareholder in 2018.
Analysis: Recruitment drive starts now after 49ers complete takeover
We News reporter Tim Thornton:
"The 49ers Enterprises have been involved with Leeds for five years now but now, with full control, it means they can get to work.
The appointment of Daniel Farke has been ongoing for the past few weeks. Now that it is completed, we can start the recruitment process and anticipate significant changes in that department. There will be a complete restructure.
Gretar Steinsson, the former performance director at Tottenham, is expected to join us and collaborate with Nicky Hammond, who has been leading the recruitment efforts during the summer.
Signings are expected to start rolling in soon, starting with Ethan Ampadu on loan from Chelsea. The deal for Ampadu could possibly be finalized later today.
This marks an exciting new phase for the club, as the focus now shifts towards organizing the necessary components to steer the club back on course for the Premier League.
Leeds fans will always appreciate Radrizzani for introducing Bielsa and the exceptional brand of football and subsequent success.
"He definitely deserves recognition for that, as the club underwent significant transformation under his leadership. However, recently the results have been disappointing."
Recruitment, Victor Orta, and several decision outcomes over the past year have received criticism, negatively impacting his tenure at Leeds. Although there might be some sentimental value attached to his time in the future, currently, he doesn't depart as the most favored owner.
