Destiny 2 has joined forces with PlayStation Studios for an exciting new collaboration in Season of the Deep during the Lightfall era. Bungie has teamed up with some of the most renowned game developers, including Sony Santa Monica, Guerilla Games, Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog, to introduce a fresh batch of cosmetic items. Players on all platforms can now indulge in exclusive armor sets, a Ghost shell, a ship, and an emote from some of PlayStation's popular games. Bungie's association with PlayStation has been ongoing, and with the recent acquisition by Sony, fans can expect more crossovers in the future. However, the possibility of an Xbox collaboration seems to be dwindling, especially since one of its key mascots has yet to make an appearance. Although this doesn't mean that Xbox is out of the race, it's undoubtedly a setback for them.
Destiny 2 and PlayStation Have a Long History for Xbox to Compete With
The timed exclusives in previous Destiny games have always been a point of contention for players. Exclusive weapons like the Monte Carlo, Hawkmoon, Wave Splitter, and the Jade Rabbit were highly sought after, but only available on PlayStation for a limited time. Destiny 2 continued this trend, but all exclusive content has since been made available on all platforms. With Sony's recent acquisition of Bungie, it remains to be seen if this will change. However, the latest cosmetic collaborations in Destiny 2 are available immediately on all platforms, which is a welcome change from previous exclusives. Xbox may need to step up their game with their own collaborations in Destiny 2, but it may be too late to catch up.
A Destiny 2 Collaboration with Xbox Doesn’t Seem Likely
Bungie's roots may be on Xbox, but Destiny has found a home on PlayStation. While Bungie will always be remembered for their work on the Halo franchise, Destiny has allowed them to explore new creative avenues. With Bungie's increasing partnership with PlayStation, it seems unlikely that a collaboration with Xbox will happen, even if it's just for cosmetic purposes. Bungie's recent introduction of Halo-themed gear in Destiny 2 without an official partnership with the Halo games further solidifies this. Unfortunately for Xbox, this puts them in a difficult position as the Halo franchise is a staple of their exclusive games. While fans have been able to create Master Chief's likeness through Destiny 2's transmog system, it appears that this is the closest they will get to a true collaboration between the two franchises.
A potential partnership between Destiny 2 and Xbox could benefit from the lesson of variety learned through the game's collaborations with PlayStation. Although a Halo crossover seems unlikely, Xbox has other notable mascots that could potentially lend themselves to Destiny 2 cosmetic items. However, the absence of an official Halo collaboration could signal difficulty for other famous Xbox-exclusive mascots. With Microsoft's first-party development team acquisitions continuing to expand, this could be the perfect opportunity for an Xbox collaboration with Destiny 2, but only time will tell. Players can currently enjoy Destiny 2 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
