During the event, Sabo confronted not only the Five Elders but also Imu himself, unleashing a formidable technique known as Rook Check.
Sabo's Mera Mera no Mi Power
Doflamingo was revealed to be the one who had obtained the Mera Mera no Mi during the Dressrosa arc, a Logia-type Devil Fruit previously wielded by Luffy's brother, Ace. This fruit grants its user the ability to transform into fire and manipulate it at will, making it one of the most formidable Devil Fruits known. Doflamingo used the fruit to lure Luffy, Ace's sibling, into a confrontation.
Initially, Luffy had competed in the Corrida Colosseum for the chance to win the Mera Mera no Mi. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Sabo took over the task of acquiring the fruit. As the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army and a skilled fighter, Sabo easily defeated his opponents and claimed the fruit, inheriting Ace's will in the process.
Sabo's mastery over his powers of fire was not yet complete during the Dressrosa arc, but he was still able to hold his own against Admiral Fujitora. Since then, he has devoted himself to training his Devil Fruit, becoming increasingly skilled in its usage and even developing new moves like the powerful Rook Check, which he used to devastating effect against Imu in chapter 1085 of One Piece.
Sabo's Rook Check Technique
Sabo demonstrated his mastery of the Mera Mera no Mi by utilizing the incredibly potent Rook Check technique in One Piece 1085, when he sprang into action to defend Cobra from the assault of the Five Elders and Imu. Sabo first unleashed a devastating Hiken attack on the Gorosei, and then reformed the flames behind them to launch an upward assault at Imu, using the Rook Check technique with astonishing speed and precision.
Sabo demonstrated his immense power when he unleashed a fiery stream towards Imu with lightning speed after reformulating the flames behind the Gorosei. The attack was lethal, showcasing the sheer strength of the technique.
In shogi, the Rook Check technique involves checking the opponent's king with the rook simultaneously. Sabo executed a similar move when he attacked all his enemies at once in the previous chapter. Although he anticipated their defeat with a single technique, he was caught off guard by their incredible power. With no other option, Sabo fled. However, he was saved by the brave sacrifice of Cobra, who protected him while he was injured. In his last moments, Cobra entrusted Sabo with a message for Vivi and Luffy.
Sabo's Devil Fruit Awakening
Upon closer examination, Sabo's use of Rook Check is a testament to his mastery of his Devil Fruit ability. Despite struggling with basic Logia powers during the Dressrosa arc, Sabo has since dedicated himself to intense training in both power and instincts. Although he may not yet match Ace's proficiency with the Mera Mera no Mi, Sabo's ability to launch consecutive attacks with Rook Check allowed him to surprise and take down the Gorosei, some of the strongest fighters in the world. In fact, Sabo was able to attack Imu from a distance with a stream of fire before they could even react to the sudden onslaught.
Sabo's ability to effortlessly create powerful techniques and attack his enemies from a distance is a testament to his enhanced control over his Devil Fruit. His use of Rook Check suggests that he may even master and awaken his power in the future. Interestingly, the story has yet to showcase a Logia-type Devil Fruit Awakening, but given the experienced fighters in the Final Saga, such as Kizaru and Sakazuki, it is only a matter of time. Even characters like Blackbeard and Sabo possess formidable Logia abilities that have the potential to be Awakened.
Sabo's constant efforts to master the capabilities of his Devil Fruit indicate that his latent abilities will likely be awakened in due time. While fans have not yet seen a Logia Awakening, it is speculated that Sabo's could potentially enable him to transform his surroundings into fire and utilize it as a weapon, or simply enhance the strength of his flames. Regardless of the specifics, it is clear that Sabo's Flame Emperor persona will play a significant role in the Final Saga, and fans can anticipate the development of his impressive skill set in the upcoming war alongside Rook Check.
