Robert De Niro's girlfriend, Tiffany Chen, shared that she encountered complications following the birth of their daughter, Gia. In an upcoming interview on CBS Mornings, the 45-year-old opened up about experiencing tingling and numbness in her tongue upon returning home from the hospital.
“Suddenly, it dawned on me that there was a peculiar sensation on my face. I couldn't quite discern what it was exactly that I was experiencing. It felt peculiar,” she revealed to Gayle King in a clip shared on Thursday, July 13th. “I attempted to partake in a meal. As I aimed a forkful of food towards my mouth, it all unexpectedly spilled out. I found myself unable to consume anything. Moreover, I began to notice that my speech was becoming slurred.”
After arriving at the hospital, Chen was ultimately diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, resulting in a complete loss of facial function, she shared.
Bell's palsy is a condition identified by a sudden onset of facial muscle weakness, which is usually temporary, as stated by the Mayo Clinic. The exact cause of this condition remains unknown. In May, De Niro, who is 79 years old, acknowledged that he and Chen had welcomed a new member to their family. He corrected a reporter who had mistakenly stated that he had six children, confirming that they now have seven.
The About My Father star, who started dating Chen in 2021, opened up about the new addition during a separate interview with King, 68, that same month.
Tiffany Chen and partner Robert De Niro welcomed their first child together. On July 13, 2023, Chen opened up about a postpartum complication during an exclusive interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings. Gail Schulman/CBS News reported that Chen shared, "I asked him if he wanted a baby, and he replied, 'Yes. This baby was planned.' They both desired this baby and are ecstatic. Love brought her into this world, so he is incredibly enthusiastic and thrilled about it."
King revealed that she had received permission from De Niro himself to share the exciting news about the arrival of his newborn. She couldn't help but gush about how adorable the baby was, while also mentioning that De Niro and his partner, Tiffany Chen, were absolutely thrilled about their precious little girl. King, displaying a photo of baby Gia a month after her birth, shared the joyful moment.
Back in 1976, De Niro became a father to a son named Raphael with his then-partner, Diahnne Abbott. Additionally, he also adopted Abbott's daughter from a previous relationship before their separation in 1988. The Academy Award-winning actor experienced fatherhood once again when he and Toukie Smith welcomed twins, Julian and Aaron, through a surrogate in 1995.
De Niro added to his family after marrying Grace Hightower, welcoming son Elliot in 1998 and daughter Helen in 2011. However, their marriage ended in 2018 after twenty years together.
When asked about fatherhood in April 2019, he confided, "I love my children and cherish the time I spend with them. It's a roller coaster ride, with moments of pure joy and times when you just want to scream. But when the good moments come, you forget about the challenges."
