Players in Civilization 6 embark on a journey to lead their civilization, advancing from primitive tools to cutting-edge technology, while striving to build a thriving society. Throughout this process, they must navigate interactions with other leaders in the game, forging alliances or uncovering adversaries.
Although only one player can emerge as the victor, the game encourages leaders in Civilization 6 to partake in diplomacy and trade with one another. The pinnacle of this diplomatic engagement is the Alliance, a contractual agreement that fosters mutual aid and protection.
How to Form Alliances in Civilization 6
To form an Alliance in Civilization 6, two civilizations must meet two requirements. Firstly, both civilizations need to have researched the Civil Service Civic, which is available in the Medieval Era after Defensive Tactics and Recorded History. Additionally, the civilizations must already be Declared Friends, a less formal precursor to the Alliance system.
Creating an Alliance with another player only requires these two factors and mutual willingness. However, forming an Alliance with an AI Leader can be more challenging. Each AI Leader in the game has their own personality, which influences their opinion of the player based on various factors such as actions, strength, and proximity. This means players may need to put in effort to convince a suspicious AI Leader to accept an Alliance. This could involve making concessions, offering one-sided trade deals, and adapting to their specific personality traits. To uncover an AI Leader's personality, players can utilize Diplomatic Visibility.
The Benefits of Alliances in Civilization 6
In the base game of Civilization 6, Alliances provide simple benefits such as Open Borders, Shared Visibility, Research Agreements, and Defense Pacts. They also make it easier to get AI civilizations to agree to other diplomatic proposals.
However, the Rise and Fall expansion significantly enhances the value and power of Alliances. It introduces five distinct types of Alliances, each offering unique advantages. Civilizations can only belong to one Alliance of each type at a time. For instance, if a player forms a Research Alliance, they would have to opt for a different type of Alliance when allying with another civilization.

How to Grow an Alliance in Civilization 6
Upon forming one of the five Alliance types in Civilization 6 Rise and Fall, players and their ally will instantly benefit from the level 1 effects associated with that Alliance type. However, to gain access to more substantial bonuses at higher levels, each member of the Alliance must strive to accumulate a maximum number of Alliance Points.
In its default state, each Alliance produces 1 Alliance Point per turn. Nevertheless, players have multiple methods to expedite their advancement. Players are rewarded with the following Alliance Points for specific actions:
+0.25 Points for initiating at least one Trade Route with an ally (+0.5 for Cleopatra)
+0.25 Points granted for acquiring a Trade Route from an ally (Cleopatra receives +0.5 Points)
+0.25 Points earned when utilizing the Wisselbanken or Arsenal of Democracy Policy cards (or Democracy Government in Gathering Storm)
+0.5 Points for Leaders who are allied with Gilgamesh and at war with the same enemy
+0.5 Points for being members of the same Secret Society
If one of the allies has Ibrahim as a Governor with the Khass-Oda-Bashi title, they will receive extra 0.5 points. Alliances can only last for 30 turns on Standard speed, so each member is motivated to work hard and reach Level 3. While having a strong alliance can be advantageous, players should be prepared to end the agreement if their ally starts to surpass them. In Civilization 6, victory conditions revolve around reaching the finish line, and an ally who is equally or stronger in strength can quickly become a competitor in the final stages.
Civilization 6 is available for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
