Kailyn Lowry was just as confused as fans were about the initial sex reveal of her twin babies.

The Teen Mom 2 alum, aged 31 and currently pregnant, took to TikTok on Monday, November 13. She wanted to clarify why she and her boyfriend Elijah Scott initially believed they were having twin boys, only to later discover they were expecting a baby boy and girl.

During the early stages of her pregnancy, which she announced last month, Lowry underwent a blood test to determine the sex of her twins. "According to the test, if there were boys, it would detect an XY chromosome. However, if there were two girls, it wouldn't show, and we would know both are girls," she explained in her storytime. "But when we received the test results, if any XY chromosomes were detected, we assumed they were both boys — that's what I thought."

She and Scott organized a gender reveal party for their twin boys, but there was a mishap with one of the smoke bombs.

However, Lowry realized in the email announcing the twins' sexes that it mentioned a "boy," instead of "boys." She clarified, "If they are fraternal and one is a boy and one is a girl, only the male chromosome will be detectable in the test. So, it wasn't immediately apparent to us, but now we know."

Several weeks later, the couple received news from a doctor that one of the babies seemed to be a girl, although it was not confirmed with complete certainty at that time. "It wasn't until later on that they said, 'Okay, well one might actually be a girl,' and then, obviously, during the 20-week anatomy scan, they said, 'Okay, one is a girl,'" Lowry explained. "That's why we were unaware about it in the initial email and the smoke bomb and all of that. We had believed that both babies were boys."

Lowry, a former MTV personality, went on to create another video to reveal the gender of her child. This time, her kids participated by kicking soccer balls filled with blue and pink powder. Her children include Isaac (13) from her previous relationship with Jo Rivera, Lincoln (9) from her ex-husband Javi Marroquin, and Lux (6) and Creed (3) from her ex Chris Lopez. In July, Lowry announced the arrival of her first child with Scott, a son named Rio, born in November 2022. In the video, Lincoln becomes overwhelmed with joy and sheds tears upon discovering that he will soon have a little sister. Lowry consoles her son, knowing how much he had hoped for this outcome.

Earlier this month, Lowry shared her speculation about the gender of her twins in a recent TikTok post. On November 2, while at a new nail salon, she struck up a conversation with the girl beside her and the nail technician who was working on her. The nail technician mentioned that she has twin girls, which led Lowry to consider the possibility that she too could be having twin girls. Intrigued by the coincidence, Lowry mentioned that she would be undergoing a blood test on the same day to determine the sex of her twins.
