Speaking out for the first time since her estranged husband, Jeezy, filed for divorce last month, How Do I Look? personality Jeannie Mai makes her voice heard.
On Wednesday, October 11, Mai, who is 44 years old, posted a photo on Instagram of a note written by hand in a lined notebook. The note said, "At times, it is necessary to take a break and disconnect in order to heal." Mai added a caption to the post, which consisted only of a black heart emoji.
This post follows the news, confirmed by We, that Jeezy (also known as Jay Wayne Jenkins), who is 46 years old, officially filed for divorce on September 14.
Jeezy filed the paperwork on June 15, stating that his marriage to Mai is beyond repair and cannot be reconciled. The documents also confirm that the couple is currently living separately.
Jeezy is requesting shared custody of their 20-month-old daughter, Monaco, along with the enforcement of their prenuptial agreement, which they signed before their wedding in March 2021. It is worth noting that Jeezy has three children from previous relationships: sons Jadarius and Shyheim, and daughter Amra Nor.
Jeezy and Mai began dating in the fall of 2018 and announced their engagement in April of 2020. Before their wedding, Mai caused some surprise by expressing her intention to "submit" to Jeezy after their marriage.
During her co-hosting stint on The Real in September 2020, she shared, "As I approach my marriage, I want to embrace the concept of submitting to my partner. This doesn't mean that I simply obey his every command regarding finances or decisions on where we should live. It's more about jointly discussing our best options, expressing my thoughts, and allowing him to make the final decision based on our shared vision. I find comfort in following his lead and willingly submitting to that dynamic."
One month later, Mai reaffirmed her belief in her own power. In an exclusive interview with Us in October 2020, she stated, "I consider myself a powerful woman because I realize the strength in making choices, and I willingly acknowledge my partner's role by granting him the authority to make decisions on our behalf." She clarified that this does not diminish her own opinions and desires, nor does it make her any less equal to her partner. It simply means that she places her trust in him.
Mai has likewise been vocal about the challenges that arise when her partner comes from a different racial background than her own.
"I believe that when considering the term 'interracial,' it is important to view it as 'inter-responsible.' In dating someone from a different race, there is a responsibility to learn and understand their culture, as everyone's experiences are unique," she expressed during an interview on "Big Boy's Neighborhood" in November 2018.
Although Mai's recent Instagram post, focusing on the need to "disconnect" and "heal," serves as her first social media upload following the news of her and Jeezy's separation making headlines, Jeezy also shared a mysterious message on the same day he filed for divorce.
“Too engrossed in the person I am evolving into to dwell on those who are not joining me. ️,”
