Sam Raimi recently responded to rumors about directing Tobey Maguire in a fourth Spider-Man film, more than 15 years after their last project together. In an interview at WonderCon in Anaheim, California, the 64-year-old director stated that he has not been approached about the project yet. Raimi mentioned that Marvel and Columbia have been successful with the current Spider-Man movies, and he is uncertain if they would want to revisit his version of the story.
Raimi directed Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007. He also collaborated with Marvel Studios on the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was released in 2022.
When asked about the possibility of Tobey Maguire reprising his role as Spider-Man, Raimi mentioned that he hasn't discussed it with Tobey directly. He speculated that Marvel Studios or Columbia Pictures may have had conversations about it. Raimi expressed that he has a good relationship with Marvel Studios, having recently worked with them on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. If there were plans for Tobey's return as Spider-Man, he believes he would likely hear about it through his connections.
Raimi is unsure about returning to the Spider-Verse, but Maguire, 48, made a comeback in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. He appeared alongside Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in the movie, wearing his superhero suit once again.
Raimi expressed his admiration for the new Spider-Man movies, particularly Spider-Man: No Way Home. He found it especially impactful to see Tobey Maguire reprising his role in the film.
No Way Home also saw the return of Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. He stirred up excitement by suggesting that Raimi and Maguire might team up again for another superhero movie.

“There have been rumors that I might be asked to do another Spider-Man movie, and I would say yes in a heartbeat,” Church, 63, shared with ComicBook.com on March 1. He mentioned that although he was never approached for another Marvel film, he believes that Sam Raimi is planning another Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire. Church revealed that he had the option to return for Spider-Man 4 if it had been made. If the opportunity arises, he would be thrilled to be a part of it.
Maguire has expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Spider-Man. He mentioned to Marvel in January 2023 his love for the films and different series. If asked to join for any Spider-Man related activity, he would gladly accept the offer.
Raimi's initial two Spider-Man movies achieved great success, but the third installment was a commercial failure and received negative reviews. The introduction of Venom, portrayed by Topher Grace, was heavily criticized and even parodied in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. As a result, the franchise came to an end.
Sony, the parent company of Columbia Pictures, decided to revamp the Spider-Man series in 2012 with Andrew Garfield to maintain ownership of the film rights. In order to retain the rights to the character, Sony is required to release a Spider-Man movie every five years and nine months. (It is worth noting that the recent Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland have been a collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios.)
Editor's P/S:
Sam Raimi's recent comments have sparked excitement among fans who have long yearned for a return to the beloved Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire. While Raimi has expressed his uncertainty about directing a fourth installment, his admiration for the current Spider-Man films and Maguire's willingness to reprise his role have fueled speculation that a reunion may be on the horizon.
It's understandable why many are eager for Raimi and Maguire to collaborate once more. The initial Spider-Man trilogy captured the essence of the character and provided memorable performances from both Maguire and Raimi. The recent success of Spider-Man: No Way Home has further demonstrated Maguire's enduring popularity among fans. However, it remains to be seen whether Marvel and Columbia Pictures will seek to revisit Raimi's version of the story, especially considering the commercial and critical failure of Spider-Man 3.
