In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Holland revealed details about the planning meetings for Spider-Man 4 between Marvel Studios and Sony. Holland, who starred in the highly successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, shared that the meetings included Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and producer Rachel O'Connor, with occasional presence of other Marvel executives. Despite being "really happy with where we're at" with the story for Spider-Man 4, Holland expressed some apprehension due to the high success of the previous MCU Spider-Man films.
It was a collaborative effort with myself, Amy, Kevin Feige, Rachel, and other Marvel executives. The initial meetings revolved around the question of why we should pursue a fourth installment, but we eventually found a compelling reason to do so. While I am thrilled with the creative direction we are taking, there is also a sense of apprehension surrounding the franchise's fourth entry, as there is often a stigma associated with it. Although we knocked it out of the park with the first three films, there is a part of me that wants to gracefully step aside and allow someone else to take the reins and bring this character to life.
When Spider-Man 4 Could Release In The MCU Phase 5 or 6
Despite the potential delay caused by the WGA strike, Spider-Man fans can still look forward to the upcoming fourth solo movie starring Tom Holland. Holland has been the first Spider-Man actor to star in four solo films, with a remarkably quick turnaround time of two years between each release. Starting with 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, followed by 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, and culminating in the upcoming 2021 release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland's portrayal of the web-slinging superhero has captivated audiences and solidified his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With so many details from the production still being finalized, it is impossible for Spider-Man 4 to follow the trend of the hero's debut in the MCU this year. Additionally, Holland is currently on an acting break that is set to last one year, further delaying the start of filming. With the ongoing WGA strike also causing delays, the earliest possible start for filming appears to be mid-2024. If this timeline is followed, the movie would likely be released in theaters one year after filming wraps, making it a potential Summer 2025 release and a major addition to Marvel Phase 6. Alternatively, following the proven strategy of Spider-Man: No Way Home, a Winter 2025 release could also be a possibility.
