Peter Safran, the head of DC Studios, has revealed that the future of Jason Momoa's Aquaman character is uncertain and it may mark the end of Arthur Curry's journey. The initial Aquaman film received high praise from critics and raked in an impressive $1.1 billion in worldwide box office earnings.
The sequel has taken a different turn. It was released worldwide this week and has received negative reviews from critics, earning a disappointing 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. The box office predictions for this weekend are also bleak. It's no wonder that Lost Kingdom may be the last time Jason Momoa portrays Arthur Curry on screen.
Why it might be “end of the journey” for Jason Momoa’s Aquaman
Speaking at the Aquaman 2 launch event, DC Studios boss Peter Safran praised Jason's portrayal of the character, stating: "When I think of Jason in this role, he is the definitive Aquaman. He’s redefined it. … It’s really been an 11 or 12-year journey for him – a lot of the audience doesn’t realize that he was cast so long ago. It’s kind of redefined him. When he took this role he was known as Khal Drogo, and now he’s really Aquaman."
Safran expresses hope that fans will support Momoa in his future endeavors, whether his journey in the role comes to an end or continues. He acknowledges the impact the role has had on Momoa and commends director James Wan for creating a cohesive story across the two films. Safran also reassures that Jason will always be welcomed at DC and Warner Bros, and mentions that his next movie is "Minecraft".
Momoa himself recently shared with Entertainment Tonight, "I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice." Aquaman 2 is currently playing in theaters. For more on the movie, visit here or explore the following articles below.

As an enthusiastic fan of Jason Momoa's portrayal of Aquaman, I am deeply saddened by the news that his journey may be coming to an end. Momoa has brought incredible depth and charisma to the character, making him one of the most beloved superheroes in the DC universe. His physicality, acting skills, and genuine passion for the role have made him the definitive Aquaman for many fans.
The success of the first Aquaman film and Momoa's star power had raised high expectations for the sequel. However, the negative critical reception and disappointing box office performance of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have cast a shadow over the future of the franchise. While it is understandable that DC Studios may want to explore new directions, it is disheartening to think that we may not see Momoa's Aquaman grace the screens again.
