Patrick Wilson expressed his desire to take on the role of director for the comic book Hawaiian Dick. He has a history of being involved in comic book adaptations, such as his portrayal of Daniel Dreiberg/Nite Owl in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, as well as his voice roles as the U.S. President in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Orm Marius/Ocean Master in Aquaman. Wilson will reprise his role as Ocean Master in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Additionally, Wilson is known for his work in horror films, with his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door, set to release on July 7.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Wilson disclosed that he already has a concept in mind for his potential directorial endeavor, Hawaiian Dick. He was even approached in the past about starring in an adaptation of the lesser-known comic book, although he is unsure about who currently holds the rights to it.
A Hawaiian Dick Movie Sounds Interesting But Unlikely
I've never mentioned before, but I want to share something. One thing that has always fascinated me and something I have always wanted to be a part of is a project called Hawaiian Dick. About a century ago, I was approached by Frank Coraci to act in that movie. Unfortunately, I have no clue about the current status of the movie rights, but I have always had a deep admiration for the series, Hawaiian Dick. I encourage you to look it up!Hawaiian Dick, written by B. Clay Moore and illustrated by Steven Griffin, made its debut in 2002 under Image Comics. This 1950s-set narrative follows the adventures of Byrd, a private investigator operating in the idyllic and exotic backdrop of Honolulu. Seamlessly blending the genres of detective noir and supernatural mystery, the comic adds a distinct Hawaiian flavor to its storytelling. Despite being a relatively lesser-known title today, Hawaiian Dick received considerable acclaim upon its release, garnering rave reviews from critics. Consequently, the success of the comic prompted Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema to secure the rights for a potential feature film adaptation in 2004.
Patrick Wilson and Frank Coraci were approached to star in the ill-fated Hawaiian Dick film, which ultimately failed. In 2015, there were reports of NBC developing a Hawaiian Dick series with Johnny Knoxville, but that also never materialized. With previous attempts to adapt Hawaiian Dick already fizzling out, it seems unlikely that the obscure comic book will ever be brought to the screen. However, if Wilson's directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door, proves successful, it may finally pave the way for his interest in directing a Hawaiian Dick movie to come to fruition.
