Kerry Washington recently shared a secret about how she used to hide her engagement ring to keep her relationship with NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha under wraps.
The actress revealed that she would pin her engagement ring to her undergarments to keep it close to her at all times. Washington, who adored her ring, even slept with it on at night. In the morning, she would discreetly pin it back to her clothes to keep their engagement a secret from others.
Washington and Asomugha, 42, have been married for ten years and have two children together, daughter Isabelle, 9, and son Caleb, 7. Additionally, the Django Unchained star is also a stepmother to her husband's daughter from a previous relationship, Anaiya, who is 18 years old.
Even though she is now more open about their relationship, Washington shared how she kept their engagement a secret over a decade ago when they were both in the public eye. Asomugha had a successful football career, playing for the Oakland Raiders from 2003-2010, then moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles for two seasons, and finally ending his career with the San Francisco 49ers in 2013. Known as one of the top cornerbacks, Washington reminisced about how they first met when she was starring in the TV series Scandal.
"He had an amazing, record-breaking contract that he had just signed, and he had already been selected for three or four Pro Bowls. When I first met him, he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, while I was on a popular TV show," she told Corden. "There was a lot of attention on our careers from the public, but we chose to keep our relationship private when we were dating. I think it was because we wanted to protect each other and ourselves."

Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha got married in secret in June 2013 in Hailey, Idaho. For their honeymoon, they chose to stay at a resort on an island off the coast of Zanzibar. Washington fondly recalls this time as “the happiest two weeks of my life.”
She cherishes a collection of shells from her honeymoon, symbolizing the happiness they experienced away from the public eye.
"It brings back memories of the time we had to ourselves to begin our journey as a couple in a special and intimate manner. We had a private wedding and then escaped to a secluded location to truly start our life together," Washington expressed. "I adore that jar. It always fills me with gratitude for the life I am living."
Before meeting Asomugha, the Emmy winner publicly announced she was engaged to actor David Moscow in October 2004. Their eventual breakup in March 2007 was widely publicized. She says having her personal life exposed caused her to keep her love life private.
Washington shared that dealing with public scrutiny of her relationship was challenging. She mentioned that her previous engagement, which ended in a highly publicized manner, made her realize the importance of keeping her personal life out of the spotlight. She recalled feeling overwhelmed by the constant attention and decided to prioritize her privacy moving forward.
