In a recent interview with People released on Sunday, Kerry Washington opened up about a significant revelation she received in 2018. The "Scandal" actress shared that she discovered her biological father is not Earl Washington, her dad, which had a profound impact on her life.
"When I received this information, I had a realization: I finally understand my story," stated Washington. "I previously had no idea about the essence of my own narrative."
Presently, the actress and advocate is openly divulging this very narrative in her memoir, titled "Thicker Than Water." Within its pages, she chronicles her enlightening journey of discovering her true lineage, which ultimately served as the impetus for penning the book.
In 2018, Washington's parents broke the news to her about her biological father after she revealed her plan to appear on PBS's "Finding Your Roots." This program showcases celebrities discovering their ancestral background through DNA testing. Rather than finding out through television, Washington's parents chose to privately disclose that they had sought help from an anonymous donor due to fertility challenges, unveiling this information to her for the first time.
Exploring our family history in depth caused me to empathize with my ancestors and contemplate the challenges they had to overcome, the hardships they endured, and the sacrifices they made. As a result, I felt a stronger sense of connection with them," expressed Washington. Additionally, she shared that this experience sparked a profound surge of love, empathy, and comprehension towards her parents.
According to a news release from the publisher, Little, Brown Spark, "Thicker Than Water" provides readers with an intimate perspective into both the public and private lives of Washington during her upbringing. The memoir uncovers her journey of overcoming challenges and setbacks, concealing childhood traumas, finding inspiration from mentors, advancing her career, and attaining fame and political advocacy. Ultimately, the memoir reveals her authentic self and a profound sense of belonging.
"Thicker Than Water" will be released Tuesday.
