Gwyneth Paltrow shared that her interest in health and wellness was influenced by her father, Bruce Paltrow, who passed away from cancer in 2002.
In an Instagram Story Q&A on Thursday, February 29, the 51-year-old actress and Goop cofounder opened up about the reasons behind her focus on self-care.
When I first became interested in wellness, it was because my father was diagnosed with cancer when I was around 25 years old. This event sparked my journey into learning about the impact of food, environmental toxins, using food as medicine, and exploring alternative practices like acupuncture. This all began back in the mid-90s due to my dad's health struggles.
Since launching her wellness and lifestyle brand, Goop, in 2008, Paltrow has been a passionate advocate for health. Her business has evolved to include a fashion line, various products, recipes, a podcast, and a magazine, among other projects.
"We operate from a place of curiosity and nonjudgment, and we start hard conversations, crack open taboos, and look for connection and resonance everywhere we can find it,” Goop’s website reads. “We don’t mind being the tip of the spear — in short, we go first so you don’t have to. We’re glad you’re here.”
Since its inception, Goop has been no stranger to controversy, releasing products such as the Jade Egg and “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle. Despite negative talk about items, Paltrow stood by her decision to release them.

Paltrow exclusively shared with We in September 2020 that she grew up surrounded by feminine care products that were strongly scented with synthetic fragrances. She felt the need to make a feminist statement through her cheeky candle, promoting self-acceptance and embracing femininity.
Controversy isn't limited to Goop products in Paltrow's life. Following a March 2023 appearance on the "Art of Being Well" podcast, the Oscar winner faced criticism for discussing her eating habits.
She mentioned that she usually eats around 12 pm. In the morning, she opts for foods that won't raise her blood sugar, like coffee. For lunch, she enjoys having soup, especially bone broth. As for dinner, she tries to stick to a Paleo diet with lots of vegetables to support her detox.
After facing criticism, Paltrow clarified on her Instagram Story that the diet had actually helped with her symptoms of "long COVID."
I have been experiencing high levels of inflammation for a while now. To address this, I have been collaborating with Dr. [Will] Cole to concentrate on consuming foods that are not inflammatory. This includes plenty of vegetables, cooked vegetables, various protein sources, and healthy carbohydrates. This approach has been quite effective for me. It's simply the regimen that has proven to be successful for my health.
