Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are set to go to trial in early 2024 to determine child custody. However, the couple is currently in a dispute over the trial's location. On October 3, a New York judge ruled that the trial will commence on January 2, 2024, in Manhattan, considering it as a federal case involving international custody.
Turner, a citizen of the United Kingdom, is advocating for their two daughters to reside in England after their separation. On the other hand, Jonas desires for the children to remain in the United States. The couple's first daughter, Willa, was born in July 2020, followed by their second child, Delphine, in the summer of 2022.
Although the most recent ruling was issued in New York, Turner is requesting that the official trial be conducted in a court in the United Kingdom. Conversely, Jonas is persistently arguing for the trial to proceed in New York City.
The judge has currently ruled that the girls of the estranged couple will stay in New York until the custody case is settled. On September 5, it was confirmed by Us that Jonas has filed for divorce after being married for four years. Since then, their custody dispute has become increasingly chaotic.
One of the issues is that their children hold dual citizenship. According to court records, Willa was born in California and holds citizenship in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Similarly, the ex-couple's younger daughter, born in Florida, also has dual citizenship in the U.K. and the U.S.
Last month, Jonas' lawyer stated to Us that Joe seeks shared parenting of the children, with the intent that they are raised by both their mother and father. Additionally, he is supportive of the children being raised in both the U.S. and the U.K.
Jonas’ legal team, however, pointed out: “The children were born in the U.S. and have spent the vast majority of their lives in the U.S. They are American citizens.”
In a September court filing, Sophie Turner disputed that she and Jonas had not made a firm commitment to establishing a permanent residence until April 2023. Since getting married in May 2019, Turner and the Jonas Brothers singer have resided in different places, including Miami and other locations on the east coast.
The actor from Game of Thrones stated that throughout their marriage, and especially after their children were born, they frequently talked about their wish to raise their children and have them attend school in England. They both saw England as a secure place to bring up their children. Turner also submitted a letter written by Jonas in June as evidence of their prior agreement to relocate from the United States to the United Kingdom. Additionally, she mentioned that they had placed a 10 percent deposit on a house in Wallingford, Oxford, shortly before their separation.
Jonas expressed in a letter, as stated in Turner’s September filing, that when he and his wife decided to spend more time in the U.K. and look for a permanent home, their daughter had three specific requirements: chickens, a pony, and a Wendy house. Although many of the houses they viewed fulfilled these criteria, when they caught sight of the charming blue shutters on [this home], they felt a sense of magic that was unparalleled.
According to an exclusive source, as the custody battle continues, it is evident that the estranged couple does not share the same vision for the future. Last month, an insider revealed that Joe is hopeful they can reach a mutually agreeable solution, while his spouse is determined to relocate to the U.K. on a full-time basis.
