Hayley Erbert reflects on her journey of overcoming challenges since undergoing emergency brain surgery last year.
"The Symphony of Dance tour just ended a few days ago, and I'm still struggling to put my feelings into words," Erbert, 29, shared on Instagram on Thursday, May 23. She posted a slideshow of photos from her performances, expressing, "This tour was incredibly fulfilling and one of the highlights of my life."
Erbert began the tour with her husband Derek Hough in September 2023. They felt ecstatic as they traveled the country and danced for their fans. However, their joy was short-lived.
Unfortunately, on December 6th, everything changed for Erbert. She had to undergo an emergency craniectomy, bringing the tour to a sudden stop. As plans to resume the tour surfaced a few months later, Erbert felt unsure about what the future held.
In December 2023, Hough, who is 38 years old, revealed that his wife had been diagnosed with a cranial hematoma caused by a burst blood vessel. He mentioned that Erbert was in a "stable condition" following the surgery.
According to the Mayo Clinic, an intracranial hematoma is described as a "collection of blood within the skull." The treatment for this condition involved a surgical procedure to remove a part of the skull in order to alleviate the pressure caused by the excess blood.
After a successful surgery, Erbert focused on her recovery so she could get back on stage. In April, her doctor gave her the all-clear and she was able to resume the tour.
Erbert expressed her gratitude for the support she received during the tour, saying it reignited a spark within her that had been missing for a long time. She thanked everyone who came out to support them on this journey and expressed how grateful she was to still be able to do what she loves. Thank you all so much! 🫶
When Erbert made her comeback to the stage during the show in Melbourne, Florida on April 14, the audience showed their appreciation by giving her a standing ovation. Overwhelmed by their support, Erbert was moved to tears. After the performance, Hough expressed how much the moment meant to both of them.
Sharing his thoughts on Instagram, Hough exclaimed, “Wow!! What a fantastic show!!! What a beautiful first show back. We were all crying tears of happiness with you.”
