The latest update for Rainbow Six Siege, dubbed Operation Dread Factor, introduces a fresh defensive operator named Fenrir, along with the Consulate map rework, a new observation blocker gadget, and various balance changes. However, players were surprised to learn that the controversial rework for the operator Frost, known for her Welcome Mats, was also intended for this update. Frost is one of the game's earliest operators, and fans were skeptical about why she was chosen for a rework over more infamous operators like Blackbeard and Clash. While some players are not thrilled about the changes, others believe that Frost has always been a balanced operator and only received minor adjustments in previous patches.
Why is Frost Getting a Rework
Frost's unexpected rework has caught many Rainbow Six Siege players off guard. While she has always been a strong and reliable operator, she is not considered to be overpowered. In fact, she is similar to Thatcher on attack in terms of her effectiveness. Despite this, the Y8S1 Designer's Notes reveal that for Ranked Matches on both PC and Console from Emerald Rank and above, Frost falls under the category of "Overpicked Too Strong." This means that she is a popular choice with a positive win rate among players.
Interestingly, Frost is being reworked despite not being among the top 10 banned defenders in both PC and Console matches ranked Emerald and above. This is in contrast to other operators like Mira and Kaid, who have high ban rates. Instead, Ubisoft has chosen to rework an operator who is mostly chosen for her easy-to-control weapon, rather than her situational gadget. Ultimately, Frost's position on the graphs and charts indicate that she is not a must-pick, nor is she an overpowered operator.
It's no secret that Frost can be a major hindrance, particularly for those players who tend to rush into buildings without properly scouting ahead or for those attempting to enter bomb sites with only a few seconds left in the round. The Welcome Mats are deadly traps that will instantly incapacitate any attacker who steps on one, leaving their teammates to revive them. However, these traps can be easily avoided or eliminated if players know where they're located.
How Frost is Getting Reworked for Rainbow Six Siege Players
Frost's Welcome Mats are set to receive a rework in Season 3 of Year 8, after being swapped out of Operation Dread Factor. In its place, a new observation blocker gadget for defenders and a mini rework for Grim, a recently added attacking operator, were introduced. Despite initial concerns from players, Frost's rework promises to be an interesting addition to the game.
The effectiveness of Frost's Welcome Mats has been reduced as attackers can now use self-revive to escape the trap. Although they still get downed, they are left with very little health and are unable to sprint. Defenders can easily track them down due to the blood trail they leave behind. This rework appears to be an attempt to reduce the severity of the punishment for those who fall into the trap, ultimately resulting in a nerf for Frost. It remains to be seen whether this will lead to a decrease in her usage in Rainbow Six Siege. Ubisoft may want to focus on making changes to less popular or more controversial operators in future updates.
Rainbow Six Siege is available now, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows.
