The new logo for Mortal Kombat 2, which seems to have been inspired by the character Johnny Cage, has been revealed as filming for the sequel begins. The film, based on Warner Bros.' adaptation of NetherRealm's gory fighting game franchise, will follow the journey of Lewis Tan's character Cole Young as a new Mortal Kombat tournament takes place to determine the fate of the world. As production for Mortal Kombat 2 starts, actor Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang, shared a photo on Instagram to commemorate working on the next installment of the film series. Take a look at the image below:
Which Fighters Are Joining Mortal Kombat 2's Character Roster?
Lin shared a photo unveiling the sequel's logo, which showcases a captivating dragon entwined around a radiant green "II." This new emblem intriguingly pays homage to the distinctive energies inherited by Urban's Johnny Cage from his lineage, manifesting as formidable powers during his combat encounters.Teased in Mortal Kombat's ending, Young arrives in Los Angeles in search of Johnny Cage. He was among the original fighters who participated in the first tournament to combat the forces of Outworld. Cage was deceived into fighting, thinking he could prove his martial arts skills, but he ended up fighting for Earthrealm repeatedly. In NetherRealm's reimagined timeline, Johnny becomes a member of the Special Forces. In the ending of the previous movie, Cole is seen searching for Johnny, indicating that in Mortal Kombat 2, this beloved classic character might take on a mentor role within the film's storyline.
In addition to Johnny, Mortal Kombat 2 will feature a lineup of fresh fighters from Outworld joining the tournament. Martyn Ford and Damon Herriman will portray the series' villains Shao Khan and Quan Chi, respectively. Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph will bring to life Jade and Kitana, two renowned assassins serving Khan and central figures in the franchise. Surprisingly, Joe Taslim will make a comeback as the resurrected undead specter Noob Saibot, despite his character Bi Han being killed by Cole and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada).
Although it was expected for Johnny to appear in Mortal Kombat 2 after his tease in the 2021 film, it appears that the actor who became a fighter may play a bigger role than anticipated, judging by the new logo. While he was not traditionally a mentor in his previous appearances, having the character take on a teaching role for Cole could be a respectful nod to his status as one of the oldest characters in the series. With Johnny potentially playing a vital part in the sequel, it won't be long before we catch a glimpse of Urban's portrayal of Cage's iconic shades through promotional images.
