The highly anticipated sequel to Mortal Kombat has recently announced the addition of four new cast members to portray iconic characters, as well as potentially recasting an original movie star. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the video game movie sequel will continue to follow the journey of chosen fighters tasked with defending Earthrealm from the desolate Outworld. Mortal Kombat 2 will reintroduce many of its original cast, alongside newcomers Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. In addition, Deadline reports that Martyn Ford, Desmond Chiam, Ana Thu Nguyen, and Damon Herriman have joined the cast as Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, Jerrod, and Queen Sindel, respectively. It's worth noting that Herriman previously voiced Kabal in the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, which may require a recast or dual role for the actor.
Why Mortal Kombat 2's New Additions Are So Important
It has been rumored that Josh Lawson and Max Luang will reprise their roles as Kano and Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat 2, despite their characters' deaths in the original film. This opens up the possibility for Kabal to also return, especially given that the character wears a mask to cover his face. Damon Herriman, who played the role of Kabal, could easily portray both characters. However, Herriman's new role in the sequel carries more weight for the franchise's future, as Quan Chi is one of the biggest villains in the Mortal Kombat universe.
Adding to the intrigue is the inclusion of Shao Kahn, which suggests that Mortal Kombat 2 will take place at the tournament itself, as previously discussed. In the games, Shao Kahn and Quan Chi have teamed up on multiple occasions, sometimes with Shang Tsung, who was a major antagonist in the first movie. It will be interesting to see if the sequel follows suit and establishes the villainous trio as allies.
It remains to be seen how the story of King Jerrod and Queen Sindel will be portrayed in Mortal Kombat 2. While Jerrod's character was mainly used as a backstory for Sindel and Kitana in the games, with his death and Sindel's subsequent brainwashing, the casting of Chiam does bring up the possibility of a tragic storyline for Jerrod and the potential for Kitana and Sindel to seek revenge.
