A photo has surfaced from the cast of Mortal Kombat 2, providing fans with a sneak peek at the appearance of Karl Urban's character, Johnny Cage. In the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, Johnny Cage will finally make his introduction to the rebooted franchise. Previously, his presence was hinted at during the ending of the predecessor, where Cole Young (played by Lewis Tan) ventures to Los Angeles in search of Cage. The movie's producer, Todd Garner, recently shared a picture on Twitter of the core cast of Mortal Kombat 2 enjoying some downtime at a restaurant. This comes as filming for the movie has just commenced.

Although the specific details of the plot for Mortal Kombat 2 are currently unknown, it has been confirmed that Simon McQuoid will return as the director for the film. Jeremy Slater, known for his work on Moon Knight, has taken over the role of screenplay writer, replacing Greg Russo & Dave Callaham, who wrote the script for the 2021 reboot. Cinematographer Stephen F. Windon has also replaced Germain McMicking, and considering Windon's past contributions to the Fast & Furious franchise, it will be intriguing to see how his unique style translates to the action sequences in this highly anticipated video game movie sequel.
Returning for Mortal Kombat 2 are Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Joining the sequel will be Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, along with Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Khan, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Damon Harriman as Quan Chi.
There is currently no release date announced for Mortal Kombat 2. However, production is underway and expected to wrap up in September, barring any interruptions from the WGA writers strike or potential SAG-AFTRA strike in July. It is likely that the sequel will hit theaters in 2024, given the focus on Johnny Cage in the first movie's ending and the inclusion of an expanded roster of beloved characters. The film has the potential to achieve the same level of success as the 2021 reboot.
