The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot movie garnered a much more positive response from fans of the source video game compared to the Paul W.S. Anderson-helmed adaptation released nearly 30 years prior. The film's R-rated approach to the intense and violent fighting central to its storyline resonated well with audiences. Moreover, the performances of Josh Lawson as Kano, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion were widely praised for their spot-on casting choices.

However, despite these commendable aspects, the script and storyline of 2021's Mortal Kombat faced criticism from fans of the games. Many expressed disappointment over the absence of the actual tournament in the narrative. Greg Russo, the original writer who will be replaced by Jeremy Slater for Mortal Kombat 2, had previously outlined his plans for a trilogy. According to Russo, the first movie would introduce the characters, the second would focus on the tournament, and the third would delve into events taking place afterwards.

Audiences are highly anticipating the improvement of Lewis Tan's character, Cole Young, in Mortal Kombat 2. Cole, who was introduced as Scorpion's descendant and the only original hero in the first movie, has received feedback from fans. With both Slater and Garner acknowledging this feedback, it is expected that Cole's storyline will be enhanced. However, considering the introduction of new characters in the sequel, there is a possibility that Cole's role may become less prominent.
